Vagas limitadas.

When grades fall below expectations, the immediate assumption is often lack of effort or a school issue.

In clinical practice, academic performance depends on multiple developmental systems working together.

Language skills support reading comprehension, written expression and classroom participation. When language development is impacted, literacy and academic progress may also be affected.

Attention regulation influences task initiation, organization and completion. Difficulties in executive functioning can interfere with academic consistency even when intelligence is intact.

Learning challenges are not always visible. They require structured assessment across communication, cognition, regulation and emotional functioning.

The Canadian Pediatric Society emphasizes that learning difficulties must be carefully evaluated to identify contributing factors and guide appropriate support.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association states that spoken language disorders frequently affect reading and writing development.

At Speak Squad, assessment is comprehensive and interdisciplinary. We evaluate communication, attention, sensory processing, motor planning and emotional regulation to understand the full academic picture.

Intervention is then structured based on evidence and individualized findings. Not assumptions.

Clarity protects children from being mislabeled and ensures support matches the actual need.

When one sibling is neurodivergent, family life requires intention.

Daily routines may involve more preparation. Transitions may take longer. Emotional regulation may require consistent support. One child may need more structure, supervision or reassurance than the others.

Siblings notice. Parents adjust. Energy is redistributed.

Neurodivergence, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD or language-based differences, affects communication, flexibility and social participation. In families with multiple children, the focus is not only on supporting one child, but on maintaining stability and clarity for everyone.

Structured professional guidance can shift the dynamic.

With individualized assessment and planning:

• Routines become clearer
• Expectations become consistent
• Siblings gain understanding
• Parents respond with greater confidence

Support does not remove neurodivergence. It strengthens the family system around it.

If your family is navigating this dynamic, a professional assessment can provide clarity and practical direction.

Many children are described as late talkers. In some cases, that description is accurate. In others, the difficulty involves speech motor planning rather than vocabulary development.

Motor speech disorders affect how the brain sequences and coordinates the movements required for speech production. A child may understand language well and still struggle to produce consistent, clear sounds. According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association, motor speech disorders involve impaired planning or ex*****on of speech movements, not reduced language knowledge.

When the underlying difficulty is motor-based, repetition of words alone does not improve coordination. Intervention must target movement sequencing and motor learning principles.

This distinction changes therapy planning. An accurate diagnosis determines the method, intensity and structure of intervention.

If your child understands more than they can say, or if speech sounds inconsistent and effortful, a structured clinical assessment can clarify what is happening and guide appropriate next steps.

What you see is simple.
A child blowing into a small toy during a session.

But what we analyze is not simple.

Clinical observation allows us to examine breath control, lip stability, jaw coordination and endurance patterns. These findings inform whether oral motor intervention is appropriate and how it should be structured.

Intervention is not selected by habit or preference. It is selected through assessment.

At Speak Squad Connective Therapies, clinical reasoning guides every decision, ensuring that therapy is targeted, responsible and aligned with each child’s needs.

If you would like to understand whether an assessment is appropriate, contact our clinic directly.

Sometimes the signs are subtle.

Fewer words than peers.
Intense reactions to small changes.
Difficulty with transitions.
Feeding, sensory, or regulation challenges.
A sense that development feels slower or inconsistent.

You do not need a diagnosis to seek guidance.

An assessment helps clarify your child’s strengths, identify areas of need, and determine whether early support may be beneficial.

Research supports early identification and timely access to support when developmental differences are present.

At Speak Squad Connective Therapies, we provide:

Speech Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Applied Behaviour Analysis
Psychotherapy
Social Skills Groups
Brazilian Portuguese Language Programs for Children

Services are available in-clinic in Burlington, online, and through home care when appropriate.

We work with most extended health benefit plans and support families navigating private insurance coverage.

If you are noticing differences, book an assessment and let’s work together to understand it.

Many families raising children in English, Portuguese, Spanish or other languages worry that bilingualism may delay speech.

Let us clarify what research shows.

Myth: Learning two languages confuses children.

Truth: Children can differentiate languages from an early age.

Myth: Bilingual children speak later.

Truth: When vocabulary is considered across both languages combined, bilingual children typically develop within normal ranges.

Myth: If a child has a speech delay, one language should be removed.

Truth: Removing a home language does not “fix” a delay and may reduce opportunities for meaningful communication.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Canadian Pediatric Society, bilingual exposure does not cause language disorders. A true language disorder will appear across all languages the child is exposed to.
Maintaining the home language strengthens family bonds, cultural identity, and long-term cognitive flexibility.

If you have concerns about your child’s communication development, an individualized assessment can provide clarity.

Society, pediatric guidelines emphasize that toilet training should begin when a child shows developmental readiness, rather than based solely on age or external expectations.

Toilet learning depends on three main areas:

Physical readiness
The child can stay dry for longer periods and has somewhat predictable bowel movements.

Cognitive and communication readiness
The child understands simple instructions and can communicate basic needs.

Emotional readiness
The child shows interest in independence and tolerates short routines without distress.

Starting before these signs are present often leads to resistance, stress, and regression.

At Speak Squad, development is viewed as a whole. When toileting feels difficult, it may be connected to regulation, sensory processing, communication, or anxiety.

Toilet training works best when the nervous system is ready.

If you are unsure whether your child is ready, we are here to guide you.

What happens during a speech session?
It begins with clear goals.

Before a child ever sits at the table, an assessment identifies specific targets. These may involve articulation patterns, motor coordination, expressive language, or comprehension skills.

During the session, those targets guide every activity.

Structured modelling supports accurate sound production.

Targeted practice reinforces specific speech or language goals.

Guided interaction fosters communication through real-world exchanges.

Responses are observed. Prompts are adjusted. Progress is documented.

Therapy is not a random practice.
It follows a structured plan designed to build functional communication step by step.

Parents reinforce skills at home.
Therapy provides clinical direction.

If you would like to understand what your child would work on, an assessment can provide clarity.

Many parents question therapy because they do not see results where it matters most.
At home. In routines. In daily life.

This concern is valid.

Therapy is not effective if it only works inside a session. It must translate into real moments families face every day. Mornings that feel rushed. Transitions that trigger frustration. Play that turns into conflict. Homework that becomes overwhelming. Bedtime stretches longer than it should.

At Speak Squad, therapy is designed to support those moments.
Across Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Psychotherapy, Brazilian Portuguese Language Classes for Children, and Social Skills Groups, the focus is the same: practical strategies that families can apply immediately within their routines.

This does not mean instant change.
It means immediate application.

When strategies become part of daily life, consistency builds. With repetition, skills strengthen. Over time, progress becomes noticeable, functional, and lasting.

Therapy works when it works where life happens.
