Many of you know that I have been away this summer, it was my first missionary trip ever as a pharmacist to the Dominican Republic🇩🇴 . Not the ocean side but on a mountain area near Haiti 🇭🇹.
How did it start? Over the last few years I have seen some pharmacists who shared their inspiring stories about joining missionaries around the world and I have wanted to go on one and this summer it was a life learning experience serving not only my own community whom I love but also other countries where they needed help and unfortunately there are lack of resources or helping hands.
I was so touched by working with a team of Canadian/American/Dominican/Haitian health care professionals. although we were all from different places in North America however I felt they were all family to me , it was very impressive how we all shared the same ONE goal of trying to help as much as we can. We didn’t have a set location for our clinics however we were travelling every day to a different village and each day was a new experience where you can see difference in the needs of each community, we were filling hundreds of prescriptions every day, some days we worked in well ventilated areas and other days it was so hard to breathe.
Outcome:I couldn’t hide my tears seeing some of the Haitian patients and how much they were in desperate need of help. I was touched by many doctors who were older and they were doing multiple missionary trip with the spirit and enthusiasm of young people.
I felt we were running a marathon that was really hard but looking in each other’s eyes was encouraging enough to keep going in helping those communities.
I learned Spanish by my last day of the trip and I may consider learning Spanish.
