Once a week, our Hockey Mastery athletes head to the track to focus on a critical component of performance: energy system development.
Hockey is a sport of explosive bursts, quick changes of direction, and short, violent shifts followed by brief recovery. Simply going for a long jog doesn’t replicate that. That’s why we utilize sprint drills on the track to mimic the exact demands of a shift:
✅ Anaerobic Power: Short, max-effort sprints develop the explosive speed needed to beat a defender to the puck.
✅ Repeated Sprint Ability (RSA): Hockey isn’t one sprint; it’s 20-30 sprints per game. Track work teaches the body to recover quickly and fire up again shift after shift.
✅ Alactic Capacity: We train the energy system that fuels those first 10-15 seconds of max intensity—without building excessive fatigue that slows you down later in the period.
✅ Change of Direction: Just like on ice, our track drills incorporate lateral work, crossovers, and deceleration mechanics to build resilient athletes who can handle the chaos of a game.
We incorporate this into the Shield Performance Offseason Program because how you train is how you perform.
