🌿 Pause. Breathe. Come back to yourself. 🌿

Nature has a way of reminding us that healing doesn’t have to be rushed. Just like the seasons, we’re allowed to move slowly, to change, to rest.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just not like yourself — you’re not alone. Therapy can help you reconnect with what matters and move through life with more ease.

EMDR certified!
EMDR is evidence-based therapy for treating trauma. It combines mindfulness, CBT, DBT and attachment theory with specific techniques for memory reprocessing. This regulates the nervous system, stimulates insight and ultimately sets you free from the past. In my biased opinion, as a client in EMDR myself, it is the most powerful and efficient way to work through trauma.

December can be overwhelming.
Between Christmas music, crowds, unintentional spending, family chaos and multiple social gatherings, remember to take time for yourself even if it’s just to pause for one breath.
A helpful acronym for self-care is NESTS:
N - nutrition
E - exercise
S - support
TS - time for self
When life is so busy there is no time for self-care, that is when you have to make time for self-care.

Less light, more colour - the contrast of fall.
Do you find it easy to see the upside to the change in the weather? How do you cope with the shorter days and colder temperatures?
Some quick tips on managing mental health during the fall:
1. Make a list of the things that you can enjoy only during this season that you are looking forward to.
2. Spend some time outside and dress for the weather - take it from the Norwegians that “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes”.
3. Re-learn how to be cozy. What kind of indoor activities did you miss out on during the summer? Now it’s time to go back to them.

An exploration of family or origin - did you feel free in these five ways when growing up?
Most of us did not and it is a natural reaction to blame our parents and see how their past actions are the reason for our current problems. The goal of this exercise is not to lay blame on how parents failed us but to recognize hidden rules and expectations from your family of origin that could still be affecting your relationships now and to challenge those. As adults, we are not obligated to follow these rules.
Do you feel upset at your parents and possibly guilty for being upset at them? How can one feel both angry and grateful? Because two things could be true - they did not notice the harm they did to you and they also kept you alive and cared for you in whatever way they knew best. To reconcile conflicting feelings about parents we have to see them as equals to us - imperfect human peers rather than view them from the parent-child dynamic we had when growing up.
If you struggle with your relationships, reach out today! We offer scientifically based Gottman couples counselling and individual counselling.

Change is in the air! Sunlight affects mental health especially in northern countries like Canada where the amount of sun we get between seasons is noticeably different. Even if the skies are clear, when the sun is low in late fall and winter, the angle of sunlight prevents the natural production of vitamin D and this affects mood.
Fun fact - if your shadow is taller than you, your body is not able to produce vitamin D naturally by sun exposure.
If you are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder, reach out today!

“Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom” - Soren Kierkegaard
Do you feel lost and unsure of which way to go? Surviving a crisis is difficult but you may find that when things are finally settled and safe, it is not clear what to do next, which direction to take. If for most of your life you have been surviving, your next actions were likely very clear and simple, dictated by the immediate outside conditions. Now you are free - and responsible for what to do next without any clear direction. That should feel good but it may also be disorienting and anxiety-inducing.
Counselling is a great place to explore and (re)discover your inner compass. Reach out if you struggle with finding your new direction!

“The nicest thing about the rain is that it always stops. Eventually.”
- Eeyore, Winnie the Pooh
Does rain in June feel like this for you? How do you deal with having to stay inside when the weather should be getting warm and sunny but it’s not, especially on a weekend? Or do you find this a welcome break from the busyness of your life?
There is an art to enjoying “bad weather” that starts with being flexible in your plans and knowing how to adjust both your expectations and your outfits.
In Existential therapy, we say many things are out of our control but there is always freedom in our attitude. We can’t change the weather by being upset at it but we can find a different way to enjoy it or be more comfortable. This requires practicing being flexible in our values. If a sunny day gives a lot to you and you feel robbed by the weather today, try to see what hidden opportunities for different valuable activities there are for you in this weather, in your life as it is today.
