Our Parent Education Program specializes in topics regarding school-age children, and offers information, practical learning, and resources for parents and caregivers. The Parent Education Program provides individual consultation sessions and a variety of educational groups and workshops.

We spoke to Annie, Parent Support Counsellor in the Parent Education Program (PEP) to learn more about the program and how her personal journey shows up in her work everyday:

"As a parent of two school-aged children and an immigrant to Canada, I deeply relate to the challenges many parents face through an intersectional lens. Parenting stress can become even more complex when families experience additional difficulties such as health issues, marital strain, financial pressure, systemic barriers, acculturation stress, or the experience of raising neurodivergent children.

My own experience navigating acculturation stress has greatly deepened my empathy and understanding of the diverse realities parents face. It allows me to connect with families not only from a professional standpoint, but also from a place of lived experience. This perspective helps me meet parents where they are—with compassion, patience, and respect—and to support their growth and transformation through the challenges of parenting.

Through my work with PEP, I strive to support families from a strengths-based perspective. I help parents recognize their capacities and prioritize connection and bonding within the family. I believe that when families focus on their strengths and nurture emotional closeness, each member is better supported to reach their full potential, even amid challenges.

I also help parents develop emotional regulation skills through both individual counselling and therapeutic groups, depending on what best meets their needs at a given stage. My goal is to walk alongside parents on their journey—honoring their experiences, celebrating their resilience, and helping them find balance and confidence in their parenting.

Warmly,
Annie"

"I never thought counselling would make such an impact on me. The counsellor has guided me on a journey of self-reflection, self-care and self-acceptance."

This Giving Tuesday we are sharing the incredible impact our generous supporters have had on the children and families who take part in our programs.

We run a variety of counselling programs that respond to the needs in our community. From family crisis counselling to victim support, we are there when children and families need us most.

A donation to Cameray Child and Family Services could help our counselling program go above and beyond government funding, and provide welcoming and inclusive spaces for sessions.

Giving Tuesday is around the corner, and we are sharing the incredible impact our generous supporters have had on the children and families who take part in our programs.

Our Assisting the Community with Transitioning Schools (ACTs) program supports students with the transition from elementary school to high school through Homework Clubs in 10 Burnaby schools.

The Homework Clubs include a healthy dinner and tutoring by trained high school volunteer mentors. The impact of this program reaches far beyond Homework Club, with participants benefiting physically, emotionally, socially, and academically, while creating healthy relationships. When they reach high school, they are more confident academically, and are received by familiar faces, and this contributes to a successful transition. Mentors have even credited the program for helping their future education, career development and community involvement.

A donation to Cameray Child and Family Services could help to provide food and equipment for our homework clubs, creating a safe and welcoming environment for children to create connections: https://www.cameray.ca/support-cameray/

Today members of our counselling team attended the New Westminster Secondary School Mental Health Fair.
We love being out meeting as many people in the community as we can and today was about ensuring youth and other local organizations know about our services. We also set up a game of Tapple to prompt conversations about mental health, emotions, coping skills and feelings.

We hope to see you somewhere in Burnaby or New Westminster soon!

Thank you Wade for Burnaby Central for visiting Cameray’s Rosser location yesterday during the Spirit of the Children Society of the Children Society Hlúlú drop-in session.

We had the opportunity to share the common challenges we are seeing in our community, as well as our priorities in the year ahead. Our counselling, early years and office staff, along with Spirit of the Children teachers, shared a conversation with MP Wade Chang about how we can do more for children and families in Burnaby.

Thank you to Tammy Hausch from Spirit of the Children for finishing the session with a drum song, and to Vera Jones for helping us to understand Indigenous perspectives as part of the conversation.

This fall, we are running Hope Endures, a 7-week group for self-identified females who are
survivors of sexual abuse, assault, or harassment. Earlier this month we spoke to Simran, one of Cameray's Child & Family Counsellors who is co-running the program:

"Hi, I'm Simran, a Child & Family Counsellor at Cameray, and this fall I will be co-running our Hope Endures program. I started at Cameray as a Victim Services Worker, which shaped my understanding of trauma and resilience. In my new role as a counsellor, I will use these skills to support survivors of sexual assault.

Hope Endures is a supportive group program for teens who have experienced sexual abuse, offering a space to heal, connect, and grow alongside others who share similar experiences. The group focuses on reducing isolation and building emotional resilience through conversation, creative expression, and activities designed to foster trust and empowerment.

Hope Endures is intentionally designed to feel welcoming and non-clinical while still being therapeutically grounded. Sessions are trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, and co-facilitated to ensure emotional safety and support. We offer snacks and dinner to create a sense of comfort, and as many participants come straight from school, this small gesture helps them settle in.

I’m excited to run Hope Endures because I’ve seen firsthand how powerful peer connection can be in the healing process. Creating a space where teens feel seen, heard, and believed is deeply meaningful to me. It’s a privilege to witness their growth and share space with them.

Best wishes,
Simran"
