“Heaven knows we need never be ashamed of our tears, for they are rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts. I was better after I had cried, than before--more sorry, more aware of my own ingratitude, more gentle.”
~ Charles Dickens- Great Expectations

“Beginner’s mind is a lovely orientation to bring into the present moment- this moment is fresh and new, we have never been in this one before and yet we bring so much attitudes and ideas into every moment; and we can’t experience them as if we are experiencing these moments for the first time” Jon Kabat Zin- on Patience- the 4th attitude of mindfulness- Beginner’s mind.
Often we come to moments with many expectations and ideas; and that can limit the possibilities. The fresh mind can bring this freshness to our moments with other people like our children, friends and family and realize that without these expectations; each new moment is full of potential and we have never been in this moment before. Let’s try applying this 4th principle of mindfulness as we are experiencing more uncertainty than even before; Let’s not forget that each moment we experience is a new moment, fresh and full of potential.

“Cultivating the recognition that things actually unfold in their own way, and that in some profound way, things cannot be hurried, so the byproduct of that is when we are always rushing to get some place else, we never actually are, which can be a tremendous loss” Jon Kabat Zin- on Patience- the 3rd core attitude of mindfulness.
Often we are impatient with getting on to the next thing, we are impatient with our colleagues, situations, or family. Applying this wisdom of patience can be healing as we accept that certain things cannot be hurried and things unfold in their own way.

Non Judging is the core of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as developed by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre.
The moment we pay attention to our thoughts, we realize that we hold on to many opinions about our surroundings: “I like this and don’t like that, This is right and that is wrong”, non judging attitude is bringing awareness to our opinions that often hold us prisoners in our own mind. We learn to be aware of the judging and not judge the judging. This awareness allows us to learn more about our opinions and understand our thoughts and their significance. Non Judgmental awarensss can bring about clarity and wisdom as opposed to confusion and opinions.
Source: from the writings of Dr Kabat Zinn, in his book: wherever you go, there you are). For today’s practice of non judgmental attitude, consider the following:
Allow yourself to be aware of your thoughts, maybe ask yourself: what am I thinking? What is impacting my thoughts? what are my opinions about this? what are the impacts of my thoughts and opinions on my body, emotions and motivation?

“Unless we accept things as they are, we are going to force things to be what they are not, and that can create an enormous amount of difficulty, if we accept the actuality of things, then we have the power to apply wisdom to it and change our relationship to situation.” Jon Kabat Zin, on second attitude of mindfulness: *Acceptance*

As we reflect on the current crisis we are going through together; let’s be aware of how our relationship to this situation is and how it is changing. Make room to explore this further, and also honour the first attitude of non judging.

Good Morning Water Lily Followers! As we wish you all mental and physical health, we would like to invite you to learn more about mindfulness with us! We would like to dedicate each day to practicing one of the 9 attitudes to mindfulness: These core attitudes (as developed by Jon Kabat Zinn, in 1979) are:

1) Non-judging
2) Acceptance
3) Patience
4) Beginner’s mind
5) Trust
6) Non Striving
7) Letting Go
8) Gratitude
9) Generosity Each day we will have a post about one of these core attitudes and how you can practice or integrate these into your life to cultivate better mental health and reduce anxiety and distress. Please go ahead and tag a friend you’d like to share this challenge with, or tag us in your posts as you practice any of these steps! Let’s do this!

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.
Thich Nhat Hanh, “
