On March 21, 1960, at a protest against apartheid “pass laws” in Sharpeville, South Africa, police opened fire and killed 69 peaceful demonstrators. These laws controlled the movement of non-white people, restricting where they could live, work and travel within their own country.

To mark this tragic date and raise awareness, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

HEU stands up against all forms of racism, violence, discrimination and harassment.

Today Community Bargaining Association (CBA) members voted 91 per cent to ratify the agreement reached between the the CBA bargaining committee and the Health Employers Association of BC.

This agreement achieves pay parity with the Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) through a combination of a three per cent general wage increase for a total of 12 per cent over the four-year term, targeted low-wage redress, flex allocations and improved shift premiums.

This is a strong result and a major win for community health workers across B.C.

The agreement, which covers 26,000 community health workers across B.C., including 2,300 HEU members, has a four-year term, retroactive from April 1, 2025, to March 31, 2029

Other highlights of this agreement include:
✅️ Employer-paid FoodSafe refresher courses and criminal record checks
✅️ Improvements to occupational health and safety language
✅️ New paid leaves for citizenship ceremonies and rural/remote travel for medical appointments
✅️ Extended portability rights across all CBA employers province-wide
✅️ The expansion of the Enhanced Disability Management Program.

Today, we celebrate Persian New Year – Nowruz – which means “new day” and marks the beginning of spring. During Nowruz, many family and friends come together around the haft-sin table, read poetry, and share festive meals.

Nowruz is a time to reflect on the past year and look to the future with hope and optimism.

May this new year bring you and your loved ones a year of peace, health, love, prosperity and joy. Warm wishes for Nowruz.

March 20 marks Two-Spirit Celebration and Awareness Day. As outlined by the Canadian Human Rights Museum, Two-Spirit, as a term, helps to link contemporary LGBTQIA+ experiences with Indigenous traditions, histories and worldviews.

The term, Two-Spirit is intended to co-exist with other terms rather than replace terms for non-binary sexuality and gender in Indigenous languages. Further, Two-Spirit is about “self-determination, rejecting colonial labels, building community and reconnecting with long-suppressed aspects of Indigenous histories and cultures, including spirituality.”

On March 20, we recognize and celebrate the strengths and tremendous contributions made by the Two-Spirit and Indigenous LGBTQIA+ community.

This is a day where we want to uplift, bring greater awareness, and support Two-Spirit community members.

HEU President Barb Nederpel joined Financial Secretary Betty Valenzuela and other members of the BC Health Coalition for a rally on March 17 where she spoke in support of public health care.

Recently, Alberta's government put forward legislation that would, if enacted, significantly weaken public health across the country.

Our neighbouring province wants to give doctors the power to directly bill patients, opening the door to U.S.-style private, for-profit health insurance and America's for-profit health care industry.

And since Alberta announced its plans to undermine public health care, Prime Minister Mark Carney's federal Liberal government has been silent.

That's why the BC Health Coalition – along with other provincial public health care advocacy groups across Canada – were rallying at federal Liberal MPs’ constituency offices to demand their government break their silence and stand up for public health care.

The B.C. government's Provincial Rural Retention Incentive (PRRI) program has been critical in keeping health care workers in rural and remote communities.

HEU members shared their stories about the difference this incentive program has made in their lives. Hillary Budzinski-Stead, an HEU member at the Rotary Manor local, is one of these workers.

“My residents are what keeps me going to my job. I work in memory care. And people with dementia hold kind of a special place in my heart. Even though dementia is such a horrible disease, I find that people with dementia tend to be happier because they’re just living in the moment. They’re not stressed out by world events and what’s going on in the news. So when I walk onto my unit, I'm able to kind of leave everything at the door, and I'm just there for them.

I actually moved to the north from the Island because of incentives like PRRI. Many of us rely on it, even though we know it’s an incentive and not guaranteed. When you live in a small community, things like emergency rooms shutdowns once or twice a month means sometimes we have to drive four hours to the nearest hospital. That gets expensive with gas prices.”
