Sharing an important initiative from one of our 2026 conference speakers, Zelyn Lee:

Chinese Canadian youth often face unique challenges to accessing mental health care, including cultural stigma, language barriers, and a lack of culturally appropriate resources. We developed MyHEARTSMAP-C, a culturally adapted psychosocial self-assessment tool available in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, to better support youth mental health. We need your help to test how well our tool is able to recommend appropriate resources for Chinese Canadian youth!

On March 27th, 2026, high school students from across the Lower Mainland gathered together at UBC’s Abdul Ladha Student Science Center to explore various fields of STEM and hear from female-identifying STEM leaders.

We had over fourty participants attending workshops ranging from Anthropology to Psychology to Civil Engineering. We held a challenge of creating a bridge and a design challenge with teams ideating solutions to the guiding question, “How might we increase the amount of water saved throughout the world?”

Our judges were very impressed with each team’s designs and our winning team won $10 gift cards.

Quantum Leaps would like to thank sponsors McCreary Centre Society, SCWIST, and DIVERT Mental Health. We have great appreciation for our workshop leaders Dr. Aleksa Alaica, Ruchika Bhatia, Dr. Tamara Etmannski, and Zelyn Lee.

Introducing 1 of our 5 speakers at this year’s conference! Aleksa K. Alaica is an anthropological archaeologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at UBC. She employs social sciences approaches and STEM methodologies to study human-animal interactions in the past, with a focus on the Andes region of South America. Mobilizing zooarchaeology (the study of animal bones from archaeological contexts) and isotope analyses, she seeks to elucidate the way that past societies of present-day Peru were managing llamas, alpacas, guinea pigs and dogs, while hunting, collecting and exploiting wild species. She is particularly interested in diverse ethnotaxonomies and how different worldviews and cultural perspectives categorize and define the natural world. Trained in archaeology at the University of Toronto for BA and PhD work and osteoarchaeology at the University of Edinburgh for MSc work, Aleksa hopes to showcase how questions we have about the past can influence our choices today and into the future.
