Inspiration to escape vs. inhibition to stay put. Inhibition is our master :) It is a fascinating area of study and is in play with all of our behaviours. Though we subjectively feel our internal world as emotional, it is also/actually neurophysiological. Balancing and recalibrating the inhibitory and escape protocols is the task in trauma therapy. Clients start at an oversensitive escape switch and arrive at one more balanced and proportionate to their environment.
Neuroscientists have discovered how the brain bidirectionally controls sensitivity to threats to initiate and complete escape behaviour in mice. These findings could help unlock new directions for discovering therapies for anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
