One Oak Counselling Burnaby Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors with 20 years of exp Hi!

My name is Naushina Kiely and I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, with my Masters in Counselling Psychology. I bring with me 20 years of experience and specialize in individual, relationship, and family counselling. I work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, healing from past trauma, coping with relationship difficulties, emotion regulation/management, stress management, and life style changes. Sometimes we’re not sure what isn't working for us, but intuitively we know that something is missing. My intention, as a therapist, is to be there for you with a compassionate presence. I will contribute my expertise, to help you, as you move towards your journey of personal growth. I am passionate about helping people and understand the courage it can take to start counselling. One on one counselling for individuals in distress
couples counselling and couples education groups
working with children and youth through schools and group homes
family therapy through community agencies
working with families involved through the Ministry of Children and Family Development
parenting support and facilitating parenting groups

Benefits of paddling:

During the pandemic, I decided to invest in a stand-up paddleboard to help me get out of the house and immerse myself in nearby outdoor activities. After each excursion, I noticed an increased sense of calm and peacefulness. There are many reasons that paddling can be beneficial for our mental health:

Stress Reduction: Engaging in physical activities such as paddleboarding releases endorphins, which are natural stress-relievers.

Sensory Stimulation: Paddling requires us to focus on the water’s rhythm, our movements, and the sights, smells, and sounds of the natural environment around us. Feeling the warmth of the sun or a breeze on your skin can be grounding and help us connect more fully with the present moment.

Increased Confidence: Conquering challenges and mastering new techniques can be empowering and improve our self-esteem.

Social Interaction: The laughter, shared memories, and time spent with others can increase our sense of belonging.

Novelty and Adventure: Trying something new can get us out of our routine and give us a new sense of excitement and adventure.

So, let’s celebrate the benefits of paddling and the bond it creates between ourselves and the world around us. Grab a paddle and embark on a journey of exploration and calm!

It turns out they’re both great for your mental health.

🌅 Watching the sun set slowly behind the horizon can help you slow down, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature, which can help reduce your stress levels.

🍿Watching a movie can have a positive emotional impact. Movies can calm us down and soothe us. We reduce the stress within us by lowering worry, and watching a movie may help turn negative thoughts into positive—as long as it is enjoyable!

Which would you rather 🌅🍿? Comment 👇🏼

Perfectionism can be described as a personality trait. Individuals who hold this trait strive for flawlessness, which often leads to critical self evaluation, concerns about what others think of you. Perfectionism is something that many of us experience that actually stems from a fear of not being good enough.

Often many of us strive for perfectionism, as we are fearing judgement from others, often a quality that comes from early childhood experiences and cultural influences.

✅Surround yourself with people who acknowledge your strengths.
✅Choose people who accept you wholeheartedly.
✅Avoid social media, especially if it leads to behaviours where you are constantly comparing yourself to others.
✅Practice Self love, self compassion, and being your best supporter—it will lead to a happier and more content life.

The COVID-19🦠pandemic has been the most traumatic collective event of our lifetime.

Sometimes it feels like ‘Covid’ is over and then we hear another story and realize it’s really not.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁?

Gosh hopefully – but nevertheless, the majority of us are dealing with the after affects of the intensity of Covid, the lockdowns, social distancing, fear and anxiety, the constant news updates and the phrase ‘new normal’.

It happened so fast and we adjusted the best we could but don’t under estimate the impact it has had on your wellness and our collective mental health.

Pay attention to the reactions you may have to all of this and always be kind to yourself and others.

Processing everything we have been through can be like it’s own virus that’s been incubating and like an ice-berg, we only see the tip of it.

We have a team of professionals that can help you as you work through the “after affects” Covid has had on you and your life. Let’s talk.🫶

TikTok Therapy

There is no doubt that social media has created space to de-stigmatize struggles with mental health. Be mindful of the pros and cons with utilizing social media posts as a way of therapy.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗦:
😌As you watch these short clips there can be reassurance that you are not alone in your feelings.
😌Provides some quick tips to learn some basic strategies too.
😌An initial feeling of relief as you get to numb out a bit on your own feelings.

𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦
😩Ironically the short clips can sometimes increase anxiety and feelings of depression.
😩The social media post can act as a good distraction and quick pain reliever; this can be addictive and take the place of creating action and movement in your life.

We are unique individuals and while “TikTok Therapy” may seem like a solution, talking to a mental health professional can offer you strategies and support your need to take those ‘aha’ moments you get on social media and move that to real change in your life.

We understand not everyone can afford therapy. One Oak Counselling offers affordable counselling options.
