My father and I weren’t really close growing up. He prioritized work over bonding with his son. It was easier for him to love me by providing for me, then it was for him to spend time with me. He feels really bad about this and has sincerely apologized. The reason I know this is because my 92 year old father and I recently talked about it during one of our nightly phone calls.
It was too late to say what needed to be said with my mom after she died on the same night my son was born. I then spent close to 35 years handcuffed by self-imposed unforgiveness. So, ain’t no way I was going to leave anything unsaid between myself and Dad! We’ve had some hard conversations, but in my experience, the awkwardness of talking through stuff ultimately weighs far less than carrying the weight of the unsaid. He and I have become much closer as a result.
For a variety of reasons, not everyone is able to have these conversations with their father.
That’s where www.INEEDTOSAYTHIS.com comes in. We’ll help you figure out what really needs to be said and then record an authentically curious interview, gently steering you towards what’s "truer", as you share what's been on your heart with a father that needs to know. Then, you can either send him the interview link or play it for him. Whether you want to thank your father or forgive him, encourage him or challenge him, or just tell him your side of the story, deep down you know that life is too short to carry the weight of unsaid things. Heck, you might even want to give him the gift of having his life story recorded during our Legacy Interviews. Just let me know how I can help. www.ineedtosaythis.com
Happy Father’s Day to everyone who's ever needed to say what needed to be said to their daddies! - Drew
