Tech Neck and Laptop Shoulders: How Posture Affects Pain (by Sara Slinger, PT)
Do you find yourself bending your neck forward to look at your phone, tablet, laptop, or computer throughout the day? Are your arms held up or rounded forward while working at a desk or kitchen table? These habits are extremely common — and they can place significant strain on your body over time.
Your head weighs approximately 10–12 pounds. When it’s held forward at a 30°, 45°, or 60° angle for prolonged periods, the muscles supporting your neck and shoulders have to work much harder. Over time, this increased load can lead to fatigue, stiffness, and pain.
Common Symptoms of Tech Neck and Laptop Shoulders
Poor posture related to technology use can contribute to:
Neck pain and stiffness
Headaches
Pressure and strain through the spine
Aching or burning sensations in the neck, shoulders, and arms
These symptoms can develop whether you’re working at a desk, using a laptop on the couch, or scrolling on your phone — and they often worsen the longer these positions are maintained.
If you notice these symptoms at work or at home, while sitting or standing, it may be a sign that your body needs support.
How Physiotherapy Can Help
At Haldimand Physiotherapy Centre, physiotherapy can help address the underlying causes of tech-related posture strain rather than just managing symptoms.
Treatment may include:
Ergonomic workstation advice tailored to your environment
Postural correction and awareness strategies
Strengthening exercises for the neck, shoulders, and upper back
Hands-on techniques to reduce stiffness and discomfort
Education around prolonged postures and repetitive use
The goal is to help you move toward a neutral, supported, and upright posture, reducing strain and allowing symptoms to improve over time.
If neck pain, shoulder tension, or headaches are becoming part of your daily routine, early care can help prevent long-term issues.
Book a physiotherapy assessment today to address tech neck, improve posture, and feel more comfortable at work and at home.
