Tech Neck and Laptop Shoulders: How Posture Affects Pain (by Sara Slinger, PT)

Do you find yourself bending your neck forward to look at your phone, tablet, laptop, or computer throughout the day? Are your arms held up or rounded forward while working at a desk or kitchen table? These habits are extremely common — and they can place significant strain on your body over time.
Your head weighs approximately 10–12 pounds. When it’s held forward at a 30°, 45°, or 60° angle for prolonged periods, the muscles supporting your neck and shoulders have to work much harder. Over time, this increased load can lead to fatigue, stiffness, and pain.

Common Symptoms of Tech Neck and Laptop Shoulders
Poor posture related to technology use can contribute to:

Neck pain and stiffness
Headaches
Pressure and strain through the spine
Aching or burning sensations in the neck, shoulders, and arms

These symptoms can develop whether you’re working at a desk, using a laptop on the couch, or scrolling on your phone — and they often worsen the longer these positions are maintained.
If you notice these symptoms at work or at home, while sitting or standing, it may be a sign that your body needs support.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

At Haldimand Physiotherapy Centre, physiotherapy can help address the underlying causes of tech-related posture strain rather than just managing symptoms.

Treatment may include:

Ergonomic workstation advice tailored to your environment
Postural correction and awareness strategies
Strengthening exercises for the neck, shoulders, and upper back
Hands-on techniques to reduce stiffness and discomfort
Education around prolonged postures and repetitive use

The goal is to help you move toward a neutral, supported, and upright posture, reducing strain and allowing symptoms to improve over time.
If neck pain, shoulder tension, or headaches are becoming part of your daily routine, early care can help prevent long-term issues.

Book a physiotherapy assessment today to address tech neck, improve posture, and feel more comfortable at work and at home.

The Ontario Physiotherapy Association (OPA) is sounding the alarm as the Community Physiotherapy Clinic (CPC) Program faces a critical funding crisis that will hurt communities across Ontario. Despite a proven track record of saving healthcare dollars, the program has been pushed to a breaking point due to chronic underfunding over the last 13 years. Current Government funding is currently less than clinics’ costs of delivering the service. Regardless, the government recently notified clinics that there is no increase in patient funding or program capacity for the next two years.

Many CPC clinics are small businesses that cannot sustain such continuing losses and will have to exit the Program. That will leave many communities without access to publicly-funded physiotherapy, after surgery, or injury.

The CPC Program is a vital health service for patients who qualify, mostly seniors and those who do not have private insurance. With seniors making up over 80% of the program’s patients, the lack of adequate funding puts thousands at risk.

Sarah Hutchison, CEO of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association, stated:

“Despite a commitment to end hallway medicine and investments in primary care and home care, we are very concerned that this government does not value the Community Physiotherapy Program. There is no increase in funding for physiotherapy clinics who deliver care and no response to the pressures of the increasing demand for service. A mere $20 increase in funding over 13 years speaks for itself.” Read the full release: https://www.opa.on.ca/2026/04/15/community-physiotherapy-clinic-program-funding-crisis/

You don’t have “bad hips.” 👀

More often, you have hips that just haven’t been moving enough.

When hips get stiff or weak, your body starts compensating, usually through the lower back or knees, and that’s when discomfort shows up.

The good news? Hips respond really well to the right mix of movement, strength, and mobility.

Better movement starts with giving your hips what they’ve been missing 💪
