What is the most frequently ordered blood test?
Complete Blood Count (CBC) 🩸

The turn-around-time for lab tests results is typically between 24-72 hours. Results are accessible to ordering healthcare providers on the provincial NetCare System. You can also view your lab test results on Alberta's MyHealth Records platform, a secure online portal providing direct access to patient electronic health records. Lab test results are posted for the last 18 months and new results show up as they become available.

Blood-based precision diagnostic tests are gaining momentum in the health space. Many biomedical and life science companies now offer innovative private-pay blood tests that help detect a myriad of health conditions, chronic disease and provide personalized insights into what's happening inside your body. Ever wondered how much blood is actually taken during a blood test? Let's clear that up! 💉🤔

In most routine blood tests, only a small amount of blood is collected. Typically, it's just a few milliliters! To put it in perspective, that's less than a teaspoon! 🥄For comparison, a pint 🍺 is collected during a blood donation!

While you may have multiple tests ordered, you will not necessarily need one vial per tests. Several tests can be consolidated into a small number of vials. The amount collected is carefully calculated to provide enough for testing while ensuring your comfort and safety. 💪

So, next time you have a blood test, remember, it's a tiny fraction of your total blood volume, and it's all done with your well-being in mind! 💉❤️

Do you have a fasting test?

Fasting before some blood tests is indeed important because eating or drinking can affect the levels of certain substances in your blood, making the test results less accurate and potentially affecting diagnoses and treatment pathways. Fasting typically involves refraining from eating or drinking anything (except water!) for 10 to 12 hours before the blood collection. Unless indicated otherwise, a fasting test can be completed at any time of day, as long as the fasting requirement has been met. Common fasting blood tests include:
- Glucose Fasting
- Homocysteine
- Fasting Insulin
- Insulin Growth Like Factor or IGF-1
- LDL (fasting is recommended but not required)

If you have a requisition for a blood test and are unsure whether fasting is necessary, it's a good idea to contact your healthcare provider or TAPLABS for clarification.

What is the single most important thing you can do to ensure a successful poke? Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Staying well-hydrated makes it easier to find and access a vein, improving the blood draw experience. Fluids should be consumed the day before and day of collection. Drinking water is encouraged prior to all tests, including fasting tests. For fasting tests, steer clear of food and flavored drinks, at least 12 hours prior to collection.
