My intention is to provide myself with grace and rest. This means having awareness of my emotional state, taking breaks when overwhelmed, understanding the types of breaks needed, having self awareness, and being self reflective.

Providing myself with grace and rest will be essential towards maintaining energy and caring for my loved ones.

Mindfulness serves as a transformative tool, fostering a profound connection with intentions and aiding in their management.

Initiating the journey toward achieving a specific goal with intention inevitably involves facing adversity, potentially causing discomfort and unpleasant feelings. The inclination to delay action to avoid such discomfort is a common response, leading to oscillation between the desire to advance and the urge to retreat.

Enter mindfulness—a powerful ally in navigating this internal struggle. Rather than resisting or avoiding unpleasant feelings, mindfulness encourages an altered relationship with them. Choosing to sit with these emotions, observing them come and go, allows for a shift in perspective.

As the ability to sit with discomfort develops, the once-intimidating feelings lose their grip, and the internal struggle diminishes. Building upon mindfulness, recalling the purpose and potential outcomes of the intention triggers a shift in mood. You can reconnect with the joy and happiness inherent in their pursuit, fostering newfound motivation to press forward.

One of the intentions I set at the beginning of the year was to incorporate more movement into my day-to-day. This isn’t limited to hardcore strength training or intense cardio, but simply being mindful of how much I’m moving my body throughout the day. A lot of us have sedentary jobs (including myself) that involve sitting in one position for the majority of the day. As we know, this can cause muscle pain or tension, and impacts on mental as well as cardiovascular health.

As I often remind people in the therapy room, it’s important to set realistic expectations and goals. That means that on the busiest of days, movement might look like taking a walk around the block or stretching my muscles between sessions. My hope is that keeping this intention in mind will help promote both my mental and physical wellbeing.

In embarking on the path of personal growth and transformation in 2024, I am guided by the principle of taking gradual and small steps. This intention resonates with my core value of honesty to oneself.

I’ve recognized a tendency within myself to pursue radical transformations, especially in aspects like physical fitness. In the past, I might have registered for a full marathon with an intensive training plan, a strategy that served me well in my 20s and 30s. However, acknowledging the changes in my physical condition as I entered my 40s, I’ve come to the realization that such an approach may no longer be sustainable without risking injury. Honesty to myself now means adjusting my training strategies, reducing frequency and intensity, and setting realistic goals, acknowledging that this isn’t a sign of weakness or failure but rather the courage to adapt to a changing reality.

This intention extends beyond my fitness journey; It’s a commitment to grow in various aspects of my life through realistic, baby step plans, executed with patience and consistency. Ultimately, this journey is about building an authentic life based on reality, steering clear of illusions. Instead of
pursuing radical changes, I am intrigued by the prospect of how this new intention will lead to transformative outcomes in 2024.

Relationships First - For me, this looks like having hard conversations when I can do my best to be fair, kind, and compassionate. And it means waiting when I am personally feeling flooded or overwhelmed. Sometimes this is hard! Not mentioning the messy room, or waiting to talk about why someone was late or didn’t follow through… but it allows me to lead with the relationship as most important and let the disappointment be information to guide the details.

It means scheduling time for people I care about, and saying no to things I feel obligated or pressured to do instead – like leaving a sink, full of dishes, letting work wait until tomorrow, or saying no to an event that interrupts important connection time.

This doesn’t mean my relationships are perfect… or that I always get it right… but it means that when I get it wrong, I feel strong enough to do the hard and vital work to repair.

If intentions serve to lay the path to who we want to be; I want to be someone with strong and meaningful connections to the important people in my life.

I really like the idea of having a word of the year. Last year my word was “Energy.” I fully embraced making choices regarding where, what, and to whom I would direct my energy.

This year I have chosen the word “Focus.” My intention is to put 💯 focus into business growth, development, and goals. I will be completely focused on meeting the intentions I have set for myself both personally and in business.

When I was in the process of buying and developing my office space last year, my Mom and I had a conversation around the risks I was taking and potential issues/concerns (she is more risk averse than me). I remember telling her “well failure is not an option.” In saying this, I realized that I have always followed that intention. When I decide to do something, I will put all of my heart, soul, and labour into it and I will always follow that rule for myself, failure is not an option and I will do everything in my power to commit and make it happen!

Happy New Year!!!
Starting the New Year off with some good reads… Atomic Habits by James Clear - second time reading this book and it is one of my favourites for helping create new habits. Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker - this book delves into the mind and changing our old beliefs, thoughts, and patterns around money and wealth. I am half way through and really enjoying it. Finally, 101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think by Brianna Wiest - I have not started this book yet but I received it from a friend who told me that this book is trending and a great read!
