Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to remember and mourn the life of every child lost, as well as the children and family members who survived and are still affected by, the atrocities of the residential school system.
Indigenous Peoples have been gravely harmed and continue to be harmed by the education, health, and social services systems, and we have a role as health professionals is decolonize mental health care. We are committed to unlearning colonial practices,
de-centering whiteness, supporting Indigenous movements, and pursuing continuous learning from Indigenous voices.
We encourage you to spend time in mourning and self-reflection today. Ask yourself how you contribute to the oppression of and racism against Indigenous people and how you benefit from living on Indigenous land. Ask yourself what role you can play in supporting Indigenous communities to dismantle systems that continue to harm and oppress Indigenous Peoples and how you can do better.
Follow, listen to, and believe Indigenous folks when they speak, and then do something meaningful to actively help create a different path forward.
