Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to remember and mourn the life of every child lost, as well as the children and family members who survived and are still affected by, the atrocities of the residential school system.
Indigenous Peoples have been gravely harmed and continue to be harmed by the education, health, and social services systems, and we have a role as health professionals is decolonize mental health care. We are committed to unlearning colonial practices,
de-centering whiteness, supporting Indigenous movements, and pursuing continuous learning from Indigenous voices.
We encourage you to spend time in mourning and self-reflection today. Ask yourself how you contribute to the oppression of and racism against Indigenous people and how you benefit from living on Indigenous land. Ask yourself what role you can play in supporting Indigenous communities to dismantle systems that continue to harm and oppress Indigenous Peoples and how you can do better.
Follow, listen to, and believe Indigenous folks when they speak, and then do something meaningful to actively help create a different path forward.

Fighting for Two-Spirit, Trans, and Non-Binary folks in Alberta has never been more urgent, especially in light of Premier Danielle Smith’s recent threat to invoke the notwithstanding clause to override court decisions protecting trans rights.

This move signals a troubling disregard for the hard-won protections that many in the two-spirit, trans, and non-binary communities rely on for dignity and safety.

The notwithstanding clause, which allows governments to bypass certain fundamental rights guaranteed by the Canadian Charter, presents a direct challenge to the safety and rights of oppressed groups, particularly two-spirit, non-binary, and trans folks, who already face disproportionate levels of discrimination and violence.

Standing up for two-spirit, trans, and non-binary humans in Alberta is crucial to ensuring they are able to live freely without fear of discrimination and erasure.

What can we do?

1. Contact your MLA and tell them you oppose use of the notwithstanding clause in this context. Write letters, emails, phone calls.

2. Support ongoing lawsuits (financially or by raising awareness) for the cases by Egale and Skipping Stone.

3. Monitor legal hearings; help publicize rulings and legal analyses so people understand implications.

4. Spread accurate information: what the notwithstanding clause is, what it means in terms of rights, what these laws do in practice for trans folks. Use social media, local media, community talks.

These laws affect real lives: trans youth’s access to health care, mental health, and their safety in schools.

The Charter and legal protections are foundational to rights for all—if they can be easily overridden, many protections are at risk.

📣And the good news keeps on coming this week (re: the BHC team anyway 😅)🎉🎉🎉

Big shout out to BHC’s Registered Provisional Psychologist Elaine for passing the EPPP this week as well! 🎉🎉🎉

For those wondering, the EPPP (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology) is a major licensing exam that all psychologists must pass to practice independently and complete their full registration. Passing the EPPP is a huge milestone in any psychologist’s career and is no small feat—and Elaine absolutely nailed it! 💥

Whether in the therapy room or working on her PsyD, Elaine’s perseverance and dedication is evident. We’re so proud to have her on our team and are grateful for the commitment and experience she brings!

Congrats Elaine, you worked EPPP-ecially hard for this moment!

We are so excited to welcome Anmol to the BHC Team! 🎉

Hi, I’m Anmol (she/her) and I am a Registered Psychologist.

I provide individual and couples counselling with a focus on creating a compassionate, culturally responsive, and affirming space. My goal is to support clients in understanding themselves more deeply, navigating life’s complexities, and reconnecting with their inner voice - especially when it’s been drowned out by expectations, emotional suppression, or the pressure to always appear “fine.”

I’m passionate about working with neurodivergent focus (with a particular focus on Autism & ADHD), deep feelers, and those navigating multiple cultural identities. I also offer couples and relationship counselling for those wanting to improve communication, strengthen emotional connection, or simply find their way back to each other during difficult times.

I offer therapy in both English and Punjabi. My approach is collaborative, relational, and tailored to each client’s unique needs. Whether we’re working through unspoken resentments, high expectations, identity challenges, or emotional overwhelm - this is a space where you don’t have to do it alone.

If you’re looking for therapy that balances depth, insight, and a culturally informed perspective - I’d be honoured to support you.

Check out: Next Level Ally by Eli Sachse

If you've ever felt like you're not doing enough to support the q***r and trans communities, this zine is a great way to learn how to do more. Be a supportive advocate and speak up, even when it's hard, learn how not to overstep, and de-gender your day-to-day language.
