Healing isn’t about being happy all the time or feeling nothing at all. It’s about allowing yourself to fully feel what’s appropriate - sadness after loss, anger at injustice, joy when it comes - and trusting that you can return to yourself afterward.

The ability to feel deeply and come back to rest isn’t weakness. It’s health. It’s resilience. It’s being human.

Check out No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz!
Is there just one “you”? We’ve been taught to believe we have a single identity, and to feel fear or shame when we can’t control the inner voices that don’t match the ideal of who we think we should be. Yet Dr. Richard Schwartz’s research now challenges this “mono-mind” theory. “All of us are born with many sub-minds―or parts,” says Dr. Schwartz. “These parts are not imaginary or symbolic. They are individuals who exist as an internal family within us―and the key to health and happiness is to honor, understand, and love every part.”

Dr. Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems (IFS) model has been transforming psychology for decades. With No Bad Parts, you’ll learn why IFS has been so effective in areas such as trauma recovery, addiction therapy, and depression treatment―and how this new understanding of consciousness has the potential to radically change our lives.
Favourite quote: “We often find that the harder we try to get rid of emotions and thoughts, the stronger they become. This is because parts, like people, fight back against being shamed or exiled.”

She’s officially back! 🎉 After some time away on maternity leave, Registered Social Worker and OG BHC team member Michelle is excited to announce her return to Being Human Club!

Michelle is currently accepting new and returning clients as she gets back into the swing of things!

Michelle works one on one with adults and teens (13+), utilizing an individualistic approach to therapy because she strongly believes there’s no “one size fits all” in this work.
With specialized training in the areas of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addictions, ADHD, and trauma, Michelle tailors sessions with a focus on feeling, understanding, and addressing root concerns.
Michelle believes it’s important to work with both the mind and body in sessions, and utilizes multiple interventions, including both EMDR & ART.
If you’re looking for a therapist who brings her personality (hello humour!) and humanity into each session, Michelle might be the right fit for you. Be prepared to laugh and cry all in one session!

So, if you’re one of Michelle’s previous humans, or interested in connecting with Michelle for the first time, you can reach out through Being Human Club or can contact mivawellness directly to book in.

Welcome back Michelle, we missed you!

Due to the urgent city-wide water restrictions in Calgary, we’re making a few temporary changes to help conserve water.

For now, we’ll be offering folks beverages in compostable cups provided by monogramco and pausing reusable cup options, in an attempt to reduce water associated with dishwashing as much as possible.

This is a short-term measure to support the city during this emergency. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us all do our part 💧

Bill 9 will not protect gender-diverse youth, it will harm them.

Restricting names, pronouns, identity, and access to care doesn’t make young people safer, it isolates them, increases risk, and strips away the support every human deserves.

Right now, it’s more important than ever to stand with Alberta’s Trans community.

We need to continue speaking up, showing up, and challenging policies that marginalize vulnerable young people.

Keep writing. Keep calling. Keep showing up. We must refuse to let misinformation drown out compassion.

Trans youth deserve safety, dignity, and care.

🎉Please join us in officially welcome Brenda to the BHC Team! 🎉

Hi, I’m Brenda (she/her) and I’m a Certified Canadian Counsellor who works with individuals and couples concerning trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, shame, self-worth, stress, grief, & loss.

Sometimes we all need a place to lay out the pieces of our story and make sense of how they fit together. In therapy, taking time to do this with care allows us to access and transform our relationship with difficult emotions, thoughts, and experiences, creating space for new ways of being.

I believe change begins the moment we feel truly seen and understood. I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where your uniqueness is honoured. You are the expert on your own experiences and the architect of your future. I am passionate about working collaboratively as you uncover insight, move through distress, and nurture your relationship with yourself and others.

I practice from a trauma-informed perspective and take a holistic, person-centered approach, drawing from therapies including Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Polyvagal Theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

I have a special interest in supporting clients navigating trauma, relationship challenges, anxiety, depression, shame, self-worth, stress, emotional regulation, and grief and loss. You can expect a blend of warmth, curiosity, and humour in our sessions.

Outside of therapy, you can find me in nature, trying new food, annoying my dog and cat, or trying to get through my constantly growing reading list.

I am currently accepting new clients for individual and couples therapy, both in person and online.

Where healing isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being real.

In this space, you’re allowed to show up exactly as you are. Messy. Growing. Tired. Hopeful. Uncertain. Human.

Just beneath the surface, our therapists stand ready — not to “fix” you, but to walk with you, gently, at your pace.

This community was built for connection. For honest conversations. For the moments that feel too heavy to hold alone.
Here, you’re seen. You’re supported. You’re not navigating your mind in the dark.

Welcome to reclaiming the art of being human.

Sarah Dent is accepting new clients at BHC!

Sarah (she/her) is a Registered Provisional Psychologist who supports adults, youth (14+), and couples. She’s been a valued member of the BHC community for over a year, and we’re thrilled to highlight her work as she opens space for new clients.

Sarah is Métis, with Cree and English roots, and was born and raised in Alberta. Outside the therapy room, she’s a mom to one tiny human and two very large dogs. She’ll tell you she’s a terrible cook and not a big fan of large crowds — yet she still manages to frequent Calgary’s breweries and city parks. She loves video games, gardening, animals of all kinds, and streaming sci-fi, horror, or animated shows.

What clients can expect when working with Sarah:

She won’t…
❌ Sugarcoat the process — therapy can be challenging, and sometimes the work touches difficult or vulnerable places. As someone who’s sat in the client chair herself, she deeply understands that vulnerability.
❌ Bring an agenda — she honours clients as the experts of their own lives and follows their pace and direction.
❌ Promise “healing” — because change is complex, nonlinear, and deeply individual. For many, the first step is simply finding support for the day-to-day.

She will…
✅ Offer a judgment-free space where clients can show up authentically, in all their nuance and complexity.
✅ Respect and affirm each person’s lived experience, identity, and perspective — and stay committed to ongoing learning.
✅ Work patiently and diligently to create an atmosphere where clients feel safe enough to explore their feelings, frustrations, dreams, and inner worlds. She knows that safety is something built, not assumed.

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy — or returning — Sarah currently has availability and would love to connect.

It’s devastating and infuriating to see the UCP invoke the notwithstanding clause to restrict the rights of Two-Spirit, transgender, and gender-diverse people in Alberta. This isn’t just policy — it’s a deliberate act of harm that tells marginalized people their identities are negotiable. These decisions fuel fear, isolation, and mental health crises in communities already carrying more than their share of trauma.

Being Human Club is a proudly trans-affirming space. We stand with our 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and we refuse to let this moment pass in silence.

TAKE ACTION: Speak up. Share this. Call your MLA. Support local q***r and trans-led organizations. Check in on your friends. Your voice matters — and collective action is how we protect one another.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out:

🎉 We’re celebrating the birthday of our amazing cofounder Megan this week! Megan’s the ultimate Scorpio powerhouse who somehow balances deep emotional wisdom and a mean pickleball serve! 🏓💫

Whether she’s spotting a rare bird, tapping out rhythms in her dance shoes, or holding compassionate space for everyone in our community, Megan reminds us what curiosity, care, and a little sass can do.

Thank you for leading with heart, humour, and the kind of energy that could only come from a tap-dancing birder who follows her heart. ❤️ 💃🐦

We love you, Megan — here’s to another year of big feelings, good rallies, and plenty of snacks! ❤️
