Many of us grow up learning how to suppress emotions rather than process them.

Emotional processing involves noticing what you’re feeling, allowing space for the emotion to exist, and understanding the message it may be trying to communicate.

Over time, this can help people develop greater emotional awareness, resilience, and self-understanding.

Learning how to work with emotions in a healthy way is a skill. Like any skill, it can be practiced and strengthened.

Children are constantly observing the adults around them.

They learn how to handle stress, express emotions, and navigate relationships largely through what they see modeled in everyday life.

This means children are learning from how we:
• respond to frustration
• talk about our own feelings
• treat other people
• repair mistakes

When adults model emotional awareness and healthy coping strategies, children begin to internalize those same skills.

Trauma isn’t just something we remember. It’s something our nervous system experiences and holds onto.

That’s why healing often goes beyond “understanding” and involves learning how to feel safe again in your body.

If you’ve ever felt confused by your reactions or stuck in patterns you can’t explain, you’re not alone.

Amanda P, one of our Registered Therapists, specializes in trauma-informed therapy and supports clients in gently working through these experiences. Book with her using the link in our bio 🤍

Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are closely connected.

Children (and adults) often experience strong emotions based not only on what happens, but how they interpret what happens.

For example:
Situation: A child isn’t invited to a birthday party.
Thought: “Nobody likes me.”
Feeling: Sad, rejected, withdrawn.

Helping children learn to notice and gently question their thoughts can build powerful emotional skills.

Supportive adults can help by asking questions like:
• “What else could this situation mean?”
• “Is there another possible explanation?”
• “What would you say to a friend in this situation?”

Over time, this helps children build flexible thinking and emotional resilience.

When children are overwhelmed, their brains shift into survival mode.
In these moments, reasoning, lectures, or discipline are rarely effective because the child’s brain is focused on managing strong emotions.

What helps first is connection. Connection can look like:
• getting down to their eye level
• acknowledging their feelings
• offering calm reassurance
• staying present while they regulate

Once a child feels understood and safe, their brain becomes more open to problem-solving and learning.

Connection doesn’t mean ignoring boundaries. It means creating the emotional safety that allows children to actually hear them.

Spring is often associated with growth and new beginnings, but in nature growth takes time.

The same can be true in therapy. Small steps, like learning to name emotions, practicing new coping skills, or feeling safe enough to talk about difficult experiences, can gradually lead to meaningful change.

For children and families navigating challenges, having a supportive space to explore emotions can make a powerful difference over time.

Psychology language is becoming more common in everyday conversations, which can be a great thing.

But sometimes these words are used in ways that unintentionally water down their real meaning.

Terms like trauma and gaslighting both have very specific definitions in psychology. These concepts often relate to experiences that can deeply affect a person’s mental health and wellbeing.

Understanding what these words actually mean can help us:
• communicate more clearly about mental health
• better support people who have experienced trauma
• reduce stigma around psychological experiences
Mental health awareness is powerful, and so is using language thoughtfully.

Leaving a toxic relationship isn’t just about knowing something isn’t right.

It’s layered with emotional attachment, self-doubt, fear, and the ways we’ve learned to cope over time.

If you’ve ever questioned why it felt so hard, there are real, valid reasons behind that experience.

Amanda P, one of our Registered Therapists, supports clients in making sense of these patterns and rebuilding trust in themselves. Book with Amanda P using the link in our bio 🤍
