Are all sugars created equal? How much sugar is too much sugar? Should you cut fruit out of your diet because they are so high in sugar?β €
β €
These are all questions we all ask ourselves, and although the answers should be clear cut, we are bombarded with confusing and conflicting information every day. β €
β €
According to the World Health Organization our daily sugar intake should be less than 10% (ideally less than 5%) of our total daily energy intake to prevent obesity, diabetes, and dental carries. β €
β €
But does that include ALL sugar? No. In fact, adding fruit to a sugary dish can actually REDUCE the amount of sugar circulating in your blood! β €
β €
How is this possible? the antioxidants and fibre present in fruit binds to the sugar removing it from your system before it can spike your blood. β €
β €
So how much fruit is too much fruit? Studies have shown that NO amount of fruit is too much fruit. Does this mean you should eat fruit and only fruit? No, you should eat a healthy well balanced diet, but that well balanced diet should include a variety of fruit for their antioxidant and fibre qualities, at any time of the day! β €

Fiber is a carbohydrate that the body can't digest. It's found in the plants we eat β€” fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes 🍎🌾πŸ₯¦
β€’
β€’
High-fiber foods are good for your health! Fiber is one of the main reasons whole plant foods are good for you and evidence shows that adequate fiber intake may benefit your digestion and reduce your risk of chronic disease.

Not only does it feed your gut bacteria, fermentable fiber also forms short-chain fatty acids, which nourish the colon wall.

The verdict? Aim to include a variety of fiber from whole fruits, vegetables and grains in your diet 🍴

As I’m sure you know, not all oils are created equal in terms of nutrient content, caloric content, and heat tolerance AKA smoke point; the temperature at which an oil creates smoke when heated πŸ”₯

A specific aldehyde is created when an oil begins to smoke, called Acrolein. It is the product of the oil-degrading/breaking down when overheated, and, like most aldehydes, is toxic to humans due to its reactive nature. The longer an oil is heated, the higher the risk for Acrolein to form.
β€’
β€’
So what can we do to prevent the consumption and creation of these toxic aldehydes in our food?

Know the smoke points of your oils and cook accordingly. The higher the smoke point the less likely your oil will produce aldehydes. Your best option is good old fashioned olive oil. Regular olive oil has a high smoke point and is also high in antioxidants.
Reduce your consumption of fast food fried foods. The oil fryers in many fast food joints will fry with the same oil for the full working day. This is a long time for these oils to be placed under high heat and puts them at a higher risk of aldehyde formation.

Hips feeling tight? πŸ€” Try this! The 90/90 transition stimulates and opens up the tissues around the hip.
β€’
β€’
Place your front leg in a 90ΒΊ angle directly out in front of you with the knee flat on the ground.

Do the same with the other leg behind you.

Place hands on the floor on each side of the front leg.

Take your time to transition from side to side, find areas of tension and spend quality time moving the hips. Give this flow a try to grease up the hips and lower back!

Lets talk about one of my favourites! The front rack position πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ
β€’
β€’
The front rack position refers to the position you hold the bar in when preparing for a front squat, lunge, or overhead press.

A good front rack position allows you to build isometric strength in the upper body as well as the trunk and core. The better the front rack position, the better your core control and stability will be πŸ’ͺ

01/12/2021

Carb density is the percentage of your food that is made up of carbs 🍞 In nature, these carbs are accompanied by fibre to slow the breakdown of carbs which ensures your blood sugars don’t spike.

The more fiber, the less blood sugar spike, which means less inflammation and a happy healthy environment for your good gut bacteria. In nature, no food exists that exceeds a 30% carb density.
β€’
β€’
why is that important? πŸ’
Many foods including chips, crackers, pasta, and bread that claim to be healthy, vegan, and/or gluten-free are processed to remove fiber leaving just the carbohydrate.

This may lead to increased inflammatory processes in your body, destroy your good gut bacteria, and impair your ability to digest.

But there is good news! πŸ‘ A simple calculation can tell you whether your healthy chickpea pasta alternative is as healthy as it claims!

The calculation is based on the serving size provided on the package label:
(total carbs in 1 serving - the fiber content of one serving) / total weight serving

For example, Liviva Organic Black Bean Spaghetti has:
20 g/serving carbohydrates
9 g/serving fiber
50 g total/serving

The calculation is as follows: (20-9) / 50 = .22 = 22%
This gluten-free alternative has a carb density below 30% and is, therefore, an excellent gluten-free alternative!

Lets talk about the importance of breathing 🌬️
β€’
β€’
Every system in the body relies on oxygen. From cognition to digestion, effective breathing can not only provide you with a greater sense of mental clarity, it can also help you sleep better, digest food more efficiently, improve your body's immune response, and reduce stress levels.

Better breathing begins with great posture. Sitting up straight allows the lungs to expand quickly and efficiently with every breath. If you are sitting at your desk and feel foggy or otherwise uninspired, take a moment to reposition your body with a straight back to notice an immediate improvement at how well oxygen is reaching your bloodstream and thereby your brain.

Is it important to stretch every day? Yes and no. Movement of ANY kind is most important and establishing your fitness goals, whatever they may be πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ
β€’
β€’
If you do enjoy stretching just remember that in order to see true benefit from the movements each stretch should be held for a MINIMUM of two minutes!

If you don’t enjoy stretching, there are other ways to lengthen your muscles in your desired ranges of motion. For example, lengthening your targeted muscles under tension. This technique, known as an eccentric contraction, will lengthen tissues AND strengthen them in the range of motion you desire! It’s active, it requires control, and best of all it can be performed in less time!

If you enjoy stretching as a form of movement, and your goal is to lengthen your muscles, then do it, but if you find little benefit from stretching and its more of a pain to perform that to not, then there are alternatives that will probably work better for you!

What is it? πŸ€” Omega 3 is a fatty acid that naturally helps the body fight inflammation

Why is it important? πŸ’‘Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, so in an acute situation such as a sprained ankle, it serves to rush natural healing agents to the area, which is a good thing.

πŸ™…πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ Inflammation is bad, however, in chronic situations because it can back up or β€œclog” the body’s ability to heal. We subject our bodies to inflammation every time we eat deep-fried or artificial foods, among other things. Exposing your body to too much inflammation can lead to cardiovascular disease, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and the list goes on, so it is important to minimize our bodies state of chronic inflammation. We can do this by making healthier food choices, including a full rainbow of fruits and veggies, fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and supplementation of Omega 3!

Best sources? 🐟 Eating natural sources of any vitamin or mineral is always the better option, but here are a few supplements that fare better than others:
- Boswellia and Evening Primrose are plant-based sources of Omega 3 so you eliminate the risk of contamination and sustainability with fish oils
- Fish oils are however a great source of Omega 3. Make sure you do your part by buying from ocean safe and sustainable sources.

11/17/2020

What are antioxidants and why are they important? Antioxidants are a substance found in fruits, veggies, and spices that protect our bodies from oxidative damage.

Think of your body as a car; eventually, without proper maintenance and care, your car will rust as it ages. Our bodies do the same thing and this damage can build up leading to cell, protein, and DNA damage associated with aging. It is important to consume enough antioxidants to stop this β€œrusting” of our bodies.

🌟Best sources?  Believe it or not, the absolute best source of antioxidants is in herbs and spices! By adding even, a single teaspoon of cinnamon to your morning oatmeal or coffee you are adding more antioxidants than consuming a whole cup of blueberries! Other great sources are, of course, are fruits and veggies.
