Are all sugars created equal? How much sugar is too much sugar? Should you cut fruit out of your diet because they are so high in sugar?β €
β €
These are all questions we all ask ourselves, and although the answers should be clear cut, we are bombarded with confusing and conflicting information every day. β €
β €
According to the World Health Organization our daily sugar intake should be less than 10% (ideally less than 5%) of our total daily energy intake to prevent obesity, diabetes, and dental carries. β €
β €
But does that include ALL sugar? No. In fact, adding fruit to a sugary dish can actually REDUCE the amount of sugar circulating in your blood! β €
β €
How is this possible? the antioxidants and fibre present in fruit binds to the sugar removing it from your system before it can spike your blood. β €
β €
So how much fruit is too much fruit? Studies have shown that NO amount of fruit is too much fruit. Does this mean you should eat fruit and only fruit? No, you should eat a healthy well balanced diet, but that well balanced diet should include a variety of fruit for their antioxidant and fibre qualities, at any time of the day! β €

Fiber is a carbohydrate that the body can't digest. It's found in the plants we eat β€” fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes 🍎🌾πŸ₯¦
β€’
β€’
High-fiber foods are good for your health! Fiber is one of the main reasons whole plant foods are good for you and evidence shows that adequate fiber intake may benefit your digestion and reduce your risk of chronic disease.

Not only does it feed your gut bacteria, fermentable fiber also forms short-chain fatty acids, which nourish the colon wall.

The verdict? Aim to include a variety of fiber from whole fruits, vegetables and grains in your diet 🍴

Experiencing wrist pain? I can help!

Wrist pain is a frequent complaint, and there are many potential causes. Many of us work with our laptops everyday, which involves repetitive hand and wrist movements in various tasks, such as typing, making you more susceptible to wrist pain. πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ’»
β€’
β€’
Best ways to prevent it?
βœ”οΈ Maintain a correct posture while typing
βœ”οΈ Exercise your fingers and wrists

As I’m sure you know, not all oils are created equal in terms of nutrient content, caloric content, and heat tolerance AKA smoke point; the temperature at which an oil creates smoke when heated πŸ”₯

A specific aldehyde is created when an oil begins to smoke, called Acrolein. It is the product of the oil-degrading/breaking down when overheated, and, like most aldehydes, is toxic to humans due to its reactive nature. The longer an oil is heated, the higher the risk for Acrolein to form.
β€’
β€’
So what can we do to prevent the consumption and creation of these toxic aldehydes in our food?

Know the smoke points of your oils and cook accordingly. The higher the smoke point the less likely your oil will produce aldehydes. Your best option is good old fashioned olive oil. Regular olive oil has a high smoke point and is also high in antioxidants.
Reduce your consumption of fast food fried foods. The oil fryers in many fast food joints will fry with the same oil for the full working day. This is a long time for these oils to be placed under high heat and puts them at a higher risk of aldehyde formation.
