RESPITE is essential for families. Be creative and find the best times that will allow you to have that necessary break. Respite doesn't have to be weekly. I find that many of my families need longer than the average 3 hrs. Find providers you trust for an extended break.

When hiring Behavioural/Developmental Aides its important to look for experienced ones. References and a short modelling session can help determine if this Aide is knowledgable and the right fit.

Some tips for families struggling to find Aides.( I know its tough) Look for experienced siblings of kiddos of children with disabilities. They are flexible, knowledgable and they have seen it all. Typically they are also more reliable because they understand the importance of parents receiving this support. Another tip when hiring a Behavioural Aide is to ask for Therapist references as well as modelling a short table top lesson. While everyone starts somewhere, specialized and home services should be with experienced Aides who make sessions easier for parents and not harder. One last thought. Quality Aides are not easy to find. Many leave the role for reasons you may not be considering such as parents looking for drivers/transportation. May Caseworkers express to Aide's that they should not be driving or leaving the family's home without the parent. There are many risks for the Aide. A quality Aide, who is determined to see progress in your child's growth should outweigh a taxi driver.
