Winter is coming!

I know that the cold can wreak havoc on your body. But the key word here is ā€œinvestā€. There are lots of good quality winter wear. Some can be pricey, but you are worth it!

Some materials to consider while shopping:

Wool šŸ‘

Down šŸ¦†

Flannel/Fleece 🧄

And remember layering is your best bet to staying toasty!

Base layer: wicks moisture (merino wool, silk)
Middle layer: insulates (fleece, wool, down)
Outer layer: protects from wind and water (waterproof)

Winter is inevitable in Alberta, so why not be prepared and embrace the cold!

I found this out this year! Parents, you can ask your child’s nurse for a letter that will explain your child’s condition and how it may affect attendance etc. As well as any special accommodation that may have to be arranged. I am actually using it for my daughter’s school and the dentist!

Don’t hesitate to tell your care team what you need. They won’t know if you don’t say anything!

For the second half of the month, we’re sharing practical tips for living with Sickle Cell-whether you’re a warrior or a caregiver, these bite-sized insights can help make life a little easier.

This tip comes from one of our incredible warriors, Helima. She keeps her care plan on her phone, and when she visits the ER, she shows it to advocate for herself.

A care plan can include:
šŸ“ŒMedications šŸ“ŒPain med dose
šŸ“ŒImmediate action steps for ER staff

This simple tool helps ensure she receives timely and appropriate care. Thank you Helima for sharing your wisdom!

The Walk for Sickle Cell was a roaring success!

Mother Nature blessed us with sunshine and smiles, and our walkers ranged from age 3 to 74-a beautiful reflection of the journey across generations.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, stepped up, and supported the cause. Your presence helped us build awareness, and community.

A special thank you to the volunteers and those that donated water, juice, and snacks. We couldn’t have done it without you!
