CUPS Calgary

CUPS Calgary Through integrated programs and services, CUPS, supports Calgarians facing poverty, adversity, and trauma to create lasting change and stability.

CUPS provides integrated support in the areas of Healthcare, Basic Needs & Housing, and Family & Child services to low-income Calgarians living with the adversity of poverty and traumatic events. While our work is rooted in the science of brain development, our passion is helping people effectively address their challenges, build stability and ultimately improve overall wellbeing.

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a time to reflect, learn, and take meaningful steps on the journey of reconciliation, one we must walk together with respect, accountability, and hope for a brighter future.

CUPS will be closed to honour this important day of truth-telling and remembrance. We encourage everyone to mark the day in a way that is meaningful to you, whether by attending events, deepening your learning, or taking time for personal reflection.

Across Calgary, there are many opportunities to gather, listen, and learn. We’ve shared a roundup of events on our blog.

✨ A big thank you to - a student-led nonprofit at the University of Calgary - for dropping off over 100 SmileKits for the CUPS community!

Each oral hygiene kit is filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, floss picks, and an information card - small items that make a big difference in helping our participants care for their health with dignity.

We’re so grateful for your generosity, energy, and commitment to giving back. Partnerships like this remind us that together, we can create brighter futures for all Calgarians.

For this month's CUPian Spotlight, meet Tamsin, CUPS' Accounts Payable Team Lead!

"As the Accounts Payable Team Lead, I'm responsible for providing leadership and direction to the CUPS Accounts Payable Team and helping support our amazing Finance group by providing relevant and reliable financial information for decision making within the organization. We work closely with CUPS Leadership, Fund development and Operations teams to provide accurate reporting to our stakeholders.

Over my 10 years with CUPS, one of the most rewarding aspects of my job is being able to provide support for our front-line staff so they can help CUPS participants achieve their goals, navigate complex challenges, and find stability. I have also loved being able to volunteer at numerous events, which has allowed me to see the impact our organization has in our community and play a part in bringing people together.

When I'm not working, you can find me spending time with my cat while reading a good book, painting, exploring the outdoors, or enjoying Calgary's wonderful theatre scene."

Last year, 503 clients connected with our Addictions and Recovery Supports team at CUPS.

Every number represents a person taking steps toward stability, healing, and growth. We are proud to walk alongside them and to continue building pathways of support.

🌍 Today is World Su***de Prevention Day

Every life lost to su***de is one too many. In Canada, thousands of families and communities are impacted each year. On this day, we come together to remember those we’ve lost, support those who are struggling, and commit to building a more compassionate future.

In 2023, it is estimated that more than 4,400 people in Canada lost their lives to su***de β€” that’s about 12 people every day. (Information Source: health-infobase.canada.ca). Talking about su***de can feel hard, but 1 conversation could save a life. Connection and support matters.

πŸ“ž If you or someone you know are in crisis or need support, call or text 9-8-8 to reach the Canada Su***de Crisis Helpline.

Community Spotlight: Tao of Peace 🌟

Each June Tao of Peace hosts their Peaceful Warrior Tournament, teaching students to embrace both winning and losing with grace while learning to handle competition in healthy ways.

Since 2018, they’ve generously chosen CUPS as the beneficiary of their tournament raffle, extending their supportive community spirit beyond their dojo and helping families across Calgary.

We are so grateful for their continued generosity and for showing how local businesses can create lasting impact.

This September, during National Recovery Month, we honour the strength of those in recovery, the compassion of families and friends, and the dedication of service providers who create pathways of support.

Recovery is both an individual journey and a collective commitment to building communities where people can heal, grow, and thrive. It is not defined by a single moment of change, but by the everyday courage to keep going.

Each step taken deserves celebration and support. For some, it means greater stability and access to the right supports. For others, it’s building stronger connections or discovering renewed purpose and growth.

By celebrating these journeys, we reduce stigma, open doors to care, and affirm that recovery is possible and sustainable when communities come together to support eachother.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day.

This year’s theme β€” One Big Family, Driven by Hope β€” reminds us that drug poisonings impact not only the individuals who experience them, but also their families, friends, and care providers. At CUPS, we see these effects ripple through entire communities every day.

We also witness the strength of those navigating substance use, trauma, and systemic barriersβ€”and the compassion of families, care teams, and communities who continue to show up with support grounded in dignity, connection, and the belief that healing and recovery are possible when we stand together.

Preventing drug poisonings doesn’t rest on one person or one service. It takes a whole community. Awareness matters. Support saves lives. Together, we can reduce stigma, expand access to care, and build a stronger community where no one is left behind.
