World Food: 🍬🍁 CANADIAN FOOD, PART 2
Canadian food is a blend of Indigenous traditions, European influences (mainly French and British), and global flavors brought by immigrants. It’s shaped by the country’s vast geography, rich natural resources, and diverse cultures.
3 British Influence 🇬🇧: The British brought hearty comfort foods like fish and chips, butter tarts, split pea soup, and Jiggs’ Dinner (a boiled meal from Newfoundland).
4 Regional Specialties 🏔️🌊
East Coast (Maritimes) Specialties 🦞🌊
Lobster Rolls – A Nova Scotia staple, featuring fresh lobster meat tossed with mayo, served in a buttered, toasted bun.
Cod Tongues – A Newfoundland delicacy, these gelatinous pieces of cod fish are often deep-fried and served with scrunchions (fried pork fat).
Smoked Salmon – Found across Canada, but especially popular in British Columbia and the Maritimes. Often served on bagels, in salads, or as candied smoked salmon.
Prairie & Indigenous-Inspired Dishes 🌾🦬
Perogies – A popular dish in the Prairies, brought by Ukrainian immigrants. These dumplings are stuffed with potatoes, cheese, or meat and usually served with sour cream and bacon.
Saskatoon Berry Pie – A dessert made from Saskatoon berries, which taste like a mix between blueberries and cherries. A Prairie favorite!
Bison Stew – A hearty, slow-cooked dish using bison meat, root vegetables, and Indigenous seasonings, reflecting Canada’s Indigenous heritage.
West Coast Fusion & Seafood 🍣🐟
Sushi – Thanks to Vancouver’s large Japanese community, high-quality sushi is a staple on the West Coast.
Japadogs – A Vancouver street food sensation: Japanese-style hot dogs topped with seaweed, teriyaki sauce, and wasabi mayo.
Fresh Pacific Salmon – A West Coast essential, often grilled, smoked, or served raw in sushi. Sockeye and Chinook are especially prized.
