Did you know that a concussion can significantly affect your hormones?❔

Yes - if you’ve been experiencing strange symptoms that you can’t quite figure out, a bump on the head might be to blame.

This is because we have two glands at the base of our brain called the Hypothalamus and the Pituitary 🧠⬇️

They regulate ALL the hormones within our body…

Peptides, appetite hormones, hormones that regulate blood sugar, stress and s*x hormones, etc…

And when we get a blow to the head (even a subconcussive blow), we can experience a cascade of hormonal issues. Most commonly:

🔸 Low energy/fatigue
🔸 Poor sleep
🔸 Mood-related issues (irritability/anxiety/depression)
🔸 Chronic pain
🔸 Gut related issues

So, what can you do to feel better? 🧐

🧠 Neurofeedback
💊 Hormone replacements
🌱 Nutritional adjustments

Ultimately, everyone is affected differently by these hormone issues. This is why it’s so important to have a comprehensive assessment first in order to determine what the best course of action is to help you and your unique symptoms.

You’ll hear us talk about quantitative-EEGs (qEEGs) A LOT here at Neurvana 🧠⚡️

That’s because a qEEG is a revolutionary, non-invasive diagnostic tool that helps us literally map your brain. Unlike MRIs or CT scans that simply look at the structure of the brain, qEEGs allow us to see the FUNCTION of your brain. They help to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, such as:

🔹 Cognitive issues,
🔹 Emotional disorders, and
🔹 Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)

We’re not the only ones who love qEEGs. Renowned Psychiatrist, Dr. Daniel Amen, is a huge proponent of “brain mapping”, and has performed more than 10,000 qEEGs throughout his career. He currently hosts the world’s largest database of brain scans for psychiatry and has used qEEGs to transform how we identify and treat issues such as depression, ADD/ADHD, Autism, and more.

To read more about Dr. Amen’s work and how we use qEEGs here at Neurvana Naturopathic Medicine, click the link below to read the full blog: “Decipher Brain Waves with Dr. Daniel Amen and qEEG” ✍️⬇️

So, you’ve just been diagnosed with a concussion. Now what? 👇

For initial recovery from concussions, it’s generally recommended that you reduce stimulation. This means reducing light exposure and staying off your phone, computer, and other electronics 📵

After a week or two, however, you should start to begin to expose yourself to stimulation again. This means,

☀️ Getting outside
🚶 Going for walks
🧘 Doing mild forms of exercise, like yoga.

Studies have shown that this is the optimal time to begin normal activities again - even if you’re still experiencing symptoms. The key is pushing yourself just enough but not overdoing it.

If you don’t push it at all, your brain simply won’t have the proper stimulation it needs to repair.

If you’ve ever suffered from a concussion, you’ve probably heard that the symptoms can come back to haunt you later in life 🤕

This leads to the question: Are there symptoms that are more likely to surface?

The short answer is: Not really 🤷‍♂️

It really depends on…

🔹 How your concussion happened,
🔹 Where it happened in the brain, and
🔹 Its impact on other systems.

However, there ARE symptoms that can occur depending on other problems that might have occurred. For instance, if there’s a structural-related problem in the upper neck, there may be a tendency for headaches or migraines.

Other than that, there’s really no way to tell which symptoms are going to be most common. Really, ANY symptom of the nervous system or brain dysfunction can surface, which is a HUGE spectrum of many different symptoms that can manifest.

Did you know that concussions can have a major effect on your vagal nerve? 🤕⚡️

Your vagal nerve runs from the base of your brain ALL the way down to your gut and it effects everything from your nervous system to your digestive system.

When you suffer from a concussion, it’s really common for the vagal nerve to shut down.

This prevents you from entering a “rest and digest” state; and when your nervous system isn’t able to go into that state, your body can’t heal properly.

If this happens, digestion usually becomes affected as well - especially when it comes to gut motility. Simply put, food and waste can’t move through your digestive tract like it should, leaving you feeling bloated and constipated.

This is why it’s SO important to retrain your vagal nerve after a concussion 🧠✨

Have you ever wondered what happens when your body gets stuck in fight-or-flight? 😰

When your stress load hits a certain point, it will trigger the fight-or-flight state. When this happens, we experience:

🔹 An increase in heart rate
🔹 A rise in blood pressure
🔹 Anxiety
🔹 Ruminations
🔹 Anger
🔹 Mood swings, and
🔹 Sleep issues

When this state goes on for too long, the nervous system becomes overwhelmed metabolically and our bodies just don’t have the resources to stay in this stressed state.

When this happens, we can flip into what’s called the FREEZE state 🥶 This is a dorsal vagal response, and it causes a shutdown response where we feel hopeless, helpless, and withdraw from our normal activities.

SO, if you’ve ever felt stressed out for a long time only to shut down and fall into a depression, I’m here to tell you that there’s NOT something wrong with you. This is just your body conserving resources…

AND there are ways to feel normal again 💙

Let’s talk about Small Oligonucleotide Therapy 🧬👇

It works by using a DNA oligonucleotide molecule to block RNA expression. Because it interrupts the RNA code’s ability to regulate cell function, Small Oligonucleotide Therapy is extremely effective for treating infections.

So, who do I generally recommend Small Oligonucleotide Therapy to? 🤔

Anyone who is struggling with a chronic infection.

While conventional medicine is good at treating acute infections with antibiotics, it still struggles to accurately assess and treat chronic infections.

Small oligonucleotide therapy allows us to target these infections with high precision. It’s also administered via IV, allowing it to circulate within your body for 6-12 months before it gets broken down 🩸

Do you think you’d be a good candidate for Small Oligonucleotide Therapy?

Have you ever bumped your head only to experience a sudden wave of unexpected mood and cognition changes? 🤔

More and more, we’re understanding the intimate connection between concussions, hormone dysregulation, and ultimately, mental health changes.

This is because 60% of head injuries result in damage to the hypothalamus and/or pituitary gland. These are the glands that regulate and communicate ALL the hormones in your body 🦠

It’s no wonder nearly every part of your body can feel “off” after a concussion 😵‍💫

Luckily, there are well-researched, long-term solutions that can get you back to your normal self.

If you’re interested in learning more about this strange phenomenon - including what you can do to heal your brain 🧠 - click the link below to read the full article, The Surprising Link Between Concussions, Hormones, and Mood Swings 👇

PSA: you’re not in the clear from having a concussion if you didn't hit your head 🗣

This happens often during motor vehicle accidents. If a sudden force hits you while you’re stationary (or perhaps YOU hit a stationary force), it can cause the brain to bounce back and forth in the skull 😵‍💫

This is really ALL you need to trigger a concussion.

It’s also why helmets don’t prevent concussions fully. They simply don't have the ability to stop the brain from moving around in the skull.

That being said, helmets DO have the ability to soften the blow to the skull and prevent fractures, so they can significantly reduce severity (PLEASE wear one 🙏🏼).

However, if you didn’t hit your head, it doesn’t mean you’re in the clear.

Just HOW important is our Circadian Rhythm? 🕑

Extremely important 👇

It affects everything we do from when we eat, to when we wake up, to when we go to sleep; and if it’s not regulated well, just about every bodily system will run sub-optimally.

Actually, 70% of our genes are regulated by “clock genes”, which are genes within our DNA that tell our cells what time it is….

This means that 70% of our bodily functions are regulated by what time of day it is 🤯

The important takeaway?

In order to stay in an optimal rhythm, the brain is completely dependent on external signals such as:

☀️ Light
🌡 Temperature, and
🍳 Food intake

Have you been experiencing intense anxiety or paralyzing depression following a concussion? 🤕

Post-concussion syndrome can actually cause a dysregulated fight/flight/freeze response. After a bump on the head (or even a bad case of whiplash) a cascade of inflammatory and/or hormonal stressors can cause a variety of issues, such as:

🔹 Anxiety
🔹 Insomnia
🔹 Cognitive issues
🔹 Depression, and
🔹 Mood swings

This is because your nervous system quite literally gets stuck in a perpetual state of fight-or-flight… And what happens when we stay in fight-or-flight for too long?

Our bodies simply don’t have the metabolic resources to deal with continuous stress for long periods of time. As a result, we enter a state of faint-or-freeze. This causes us to experience feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, dissociation, and deep depression.

Does this sound all too familiar?

I want you to know that there are effective, long-term solutions to get your nervous system back to normal 🧠

You’ve probably heard me talk a lot about the benefits of Neurofeedback. It can be a gamechanger for conditions like:

🔹 Anxiety
🔹 Depression
🔹 Post-concussion syndrome
🔹 Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS)
🔹 And so much more…

But how does Neurofeedback actually WORK? 🧠✨

It all starts with a q-EEG, which is basically a map of your brain 🗺

This allows us to see the FUNCTION of your brain and which parts are actually dysregulated.

You’ll get a funny-looking cap with a bunch of different electrodes which allows us to pick up the electrical signals coming off your scalp.

We can then:

🔸 Collect your brain waves,
🔸 Quantify them in real-time,
🔸 And select certain areas in your brain that we want to train through Operant Conditioning (which is basically just audio or video feedback).

The brain is then able to learn about the state it’s in and adjust its level of functioning.

When we select areas of the brain that we want to train (to perhaps improve communication, downregulate an area that’s overactive, or up-regulate an area that’s underactive) we are really just selecting those brain waves and then feeding back a signal through a video, or by literally playing a game with your brain 👾

When your brain is doing what we want it to do, you’ll get feedback in the form of visual and audio information, but when the brain ISN’T doing what we want it to do, all of the feedback cuts out 😵

Because the brain is wired to get rewarded, it adjusts its functioning through what’s called a “Brain Computer Interface” in order to continue receiving those audio and visual signals.

THIS is how we train and condition the brain to wire itself into a desired state and eliminate the undesired pathways that kept you dysregulated ⚡️

Not only will it increase the Neuroplasticity of your brain - the results will be LONG-TERM.
