I wanted to share a personal story about my experience with alternative health care and how it supported me during a really difficult time.

Last year right before my wedding, something unexpected happened. I was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. At the time, I thought I was taking care of myself. But the stress of planning a wedding (even the happy kind) can take a real toll on the body.

5 days after returning home from Nashville for my bachelorette, I woke up and my face starting to droop along with numbness and tingling on one side of my face. I went to the emergency room right away and they rushed me in for CT scan almost instantly to rule out a stroke. Thankfully it wasn’t a stroke, but it was Bell’s palsy.

Bell’s palsy is a temporary paralysis or weakness of the facial nerve that causes one side of the face to droop. It’s often linked to inflammation of the facial nerve and can be triggered by things like viral infections, immune stress, or intense physical or emotional stress (which was likely the case for me).

Hearing that diagnosis six weeks before my wedding was devastating. All I could think about was whether my face would recover in time for the wedding and if I would feel like myself on one of the most important days of my life. I did everything I could to support my recovery and stress with many IV treatments, targeted supplements and help and support from my colleagues as well as weekly facial acupuncture with Lorraine at

And honestly, the acupuncture made the biggest difference. Bell’s palsy can take months to recover from, but after each session I could see improvement. Week by week my facial movement started coming back with less and less facial drooping. By the time my wedding day arrived, the difference was incredible, you could barely tell.

I am forever grateful for alternative medicine practitioners, the support of my friends and family, and even our healthcare system for helping diagnose and treat me so quickly when I needed it most.

It’s a new year, new followers, and the perfect moment to share who I am and how I support my patients.

I’m Dr. Karlee, a Naturopathic Doctor and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner.

Born and raised in Calgary, I grew up figure skating and playing competitive fast-pitch softball. During that time, my own health journey introduced me to naturopathic medicine. Experiencing firsthand how identifying and addressing root causes transformed my health inspired me to help others do the same.

I’m passionate about supporting patients with hormonal imbalances, acne, PCOS, endometriosis, thyroid conditions, anti-aging medicine, skin concerns, weight management, fertility, menopause, digestive health, mood and sleep optimization, stress management, and burnout and fatigue.

My approach is simple: test, don’t guess. I use comprehensive functional lab testing to gain a deeper understanding of your health and uncover the root causes of your concerns. I had acne as a teenager and also get the odd adult acne breakouts and understand the frustration that comes with having it. Luckily, there are lots of ways we can treat acne but it is important to find the root cause. Below are some of the main causes of acne:

HORMONES 🌸Hormonal acne often presents itself as cystic acne on the chin, jawline, cheeks and sometimes the chest and back. This can be caused by an imbalance of estrogen/progesterone, or high androgens. Hormonal imbalance may be caused by PCOS, poor diet and digestion, poor liver detoxification, high stress and so many other factors!

BLOOD SUGAR 🍭Consumption of simple carbohydrates and refined sugar have been known to cause acne which increases your insulin levels in your body. High insulin can contribute to high androgens which cause acne.

GUT HEALTH 💩 Food sensitivities or SIBO have also been shown to cause acne. Acne presenting around the mouth or forehead indicates inflammation in the gut. Poor diet and consumption of too much dairy can also cause acne, therefore addressing food sensitivities or SIBO can really improve your gut and skin health.

STRESS 😩 When you are stressed, your body increases cortisol production. High cortisol increases oil production in your skin glands and may also cause your hormones to become out of balance.

INFLAMMATION 💥Acne is a sign of inflammation in the body. Sometimes, irritation to the skin (like a mask) can cause inflammatory acne. Inflammatory acne also indicates inflammation in the gut and food sensitivities or SIBO may need to be addressed.

NUTRIENT DEFICIENCIES 💊Sometimes, acne may not be hormonal or inflammatory, and may be caused by nutritional deficiencies. Low vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega 3s, zinc and selenium have been associated with acne. Ask your doctor before starting any supplementation.

POOR SKIN CARE ROUTINE🧴This is so important! Not only do you treat acne from within, but topically as well for faster results. My next post will dive into the importance of a good skin care routine and which products are needed to treat acne effectively.
