Mastering a skill? 200-300 trials of a novel task are required to improve performance. If your exercise or rehabilitation is focused on perfecting a movement pattern or skilled task, aim to perform 20 repetitions for 5 sets. It takes up to 60 minutes of practice a day for several weeks to learn a motor skill.

Wondering how you can enhance your rehabilitation? Introducing the OPTIMAL theory for motor learning. This theory highlights the importance of what the learner wants to achieve and how skilled movement can achieve that goal. The four principles of this theory are: self-efficacy, enhanced expectancies, autonomy and attention. Over my next few posts I’ll talk about each one of these principles.
