ASPEMS is IMMEDIATELY hiring multiple individuals across Alberta to support COVID-19 Rapid Testing at the Government of Alberta Wildfire Operations locations.
We need multiple individuals (20+) across Alberta with a professional laboratory background, who conduct themselves with a calm demeanor and positive approach, and are skilled in interacting efficiently and accurately while testing high volumes of samples. Laboratory Technicians are responsible to prepare for and conduct testing of nasopharyngeal swabs and throat swabs, for all age groups, for both symptomatic and asymptomatic populations.
This position is part of the ASPEMS Covid 19 response.
Description:
The laboratory technician supports infectious disease testing and prevention. Working as a member of an interdisciplinary team, staff prepare, test clients, document, and finalize tested samples. Under the guidance of our Medical Director, the role adheres to ASPEMS documentation guidelines and lab testing policy, procedures, and standards. As the appropriate use of full Personal Protective Equipment (masks, gowns, gloves, eye protection) is also required to perform testing, the staff must adhere to all ASPEMS Infection, Prevention and Control requirements, guidelines, and practices and are required to take continued precautions wherever required, including at break and meal times.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
Performs COVID 19 sample collection by means of Nasopharyngeal (NP Swab), Saliva, Anterior Narre, or blood draw. Samples will be rapid tested on site using approved Health Canada Authorized Testing, and positive samples will be sent to our CPSA approved lab for further PCR testing.
Receive incoming patients to have provide specimen for collection, fill out accompanying requisitions, working with administration and check for accuracy and completeness of the information. PIPED compliancy throughout processes.
Verify COVID-related specimen type; sort and assign laboratory numbers to specimens.
Store and retrieve COVID-related specimens under appropriate conditions
Maintain sample collection equipment, such as vials, swabs, coolers, and testing equipment. Perform maintenance procedures. Follow complete Q&A and follow all set forth guidelines that are in place.
Prepares results for reporting.
Works with Medical Director to report positive results to Public Health
What you need to be successful in the role:
Bachelor of Science in Microbiology or related biological science, OR Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
Certification in field of study, Laboratory Technologist, EMR, P*P, or ACP, LPN or RN.
One (1) year of recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Demonstrate ability to operate related equipment and use related software.
Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, manage time and work independently.
Registered within the province of Alberta within scope of practice, with governing body.
Contract length: 4 months
Part-time hours: 40 per week
