My bone to pick with social media.
In a real, ordinary, non-curated life:
“Success is not the absence of struggle”
And what this means — is that you don’t have to beat yourself up for struggling — with your health, your mental health, your relationships, your job, your healing. It can all look a bit messy, AND you can be achieving small and important steps of success that should be celebrated.
BUT — social media is all about absence of struggle. And absence of imperfection.
And often, the absence of human connection.
Social media is a space to celebrate our flawless success, unless… our struggle is “big enough” to be worth posting.
If you’ve ever heard of social media being compared to the popularity contest that takes place in most high schools… well, this is what I’m talking about!
To receive likes/views/etc. online, there is often this pressure for the thing you’re posting about to be on either end of the spectrum, of either a) total success with no struggle, OR b) total struggle, and one that’s meaningful enough to be worth posting.
But what about all the grey — all the dull, yet beautiful in-between moments of our lives?
The ones that connect us as human beings, yet seem to have no place in the current world of social media.
So… why are we all gathered here?
Some days I don’t have an answer to this. And I question why I bother to show up online. And I take breaks (often) from even logging on.
Having said that, here’s why I still show up:
- those small but powerful connection points I have made, because of social media
- hope that more of the grey & in-between moments can and will be celebrated online
- I may only be one voice, but I have the power to follow through on the second bullet point, in hopes that it inspires others to do the same!
- laughter! If the right meme comes my way through the algorithm, I end up laughing so hard that my dog looks at me with a very confused and concerned expression…
- my desire to be inspired by other therapists out there, who I’ve noticed, like me, are breaking barriers and posting about themselves and their practices unapologetically
- because in a world where there’s so much out of my control, it feels good to use my voice to share kind, respectful, honest, content - in hopes that it lands softly upon someone else’s day
What’s your why - for continuing to log on?
