Let’s unpack this: We perpetuate that looking fit is the goal. That our body is a project.

Having a project distracts us and helps us cope during tough times! If you are experiencing multiple stressors you may feel a desire to seek self improvement or fixate on your flaws that you feel are in your control to change.
BUT..
Your body doesn’t need to look a certain way in order to meet your health goals. Health is not a look. Human bodies would be a lot healthier if we didn’t think we had to conform to a very rigid standard.

Listen to your needs. Move enjoyably, eat deliciously, rest peacefully.

When I chose my Instagram colours, there was an intention. Red for MMIWG, Purple for Overdose Awareness, Orange for Every Child Matters, and Black for Black Lives Matter. The colours are a reminder to ME that I have an obligation to always keep advocating. You can treat everyone with the same respect but we can’t ignore the systemic privilege we have and believing that we all have the same opportunities if we work the same amount. Many are exhausted from constantly fighting a battle they can never quit. Just because it is not your lived experience doesn’t mean you can’t stand in the fight to show solidarity for injustice. Google how you can show up in your community.

Busy?! We understand. Nutrition needs to be practical and realistic. There are areas you can cut corners without blowing your food budget on the drive-thru. By just assembling pre-made chicken/rice/vegetables you can make:

- Butter chicken with rice and cauliflower
- Greek chicken rice bowls
- Pesto chicken and broccoli with rice
- Teriyaki chicken stir fry
- Chicken burrito bowl

Different meals everyday without feeling repetitive! Check out blog for more nutrition tips and recipes!

For many, food aversions can stem from past pressures to eat what we didn’t choose and/or food insecurities. It can be triggering and difficult so we need to have empathy for those that are defensive with their food preferences.

What do I mean?
I mean - Will 👏🏻 this 👏🏻 help 👏🏻 you 👏🏻
Whether you are contemplating snacking on baked goods at the office, or picking up your favourite fast food, or prepping lunches for the week - will this help you and is this what you need?
*Will it decrease your hunger? Will it improve your mood/wellbeing after the meal is eaten, not just during?
*Will it support your health condition or performance?
*Will it give you more time to spend doing something you love?
*Will it be a yummy pick-me-up that you can eat while you process an uncomfortable emotion?
*Will it be eaten with a coworker for social connection?
If it doesn’t help you, leave it. We don’t need over think it.
We have so many food thoughts all the time: too many calories, too much carbs, too processed, mealtimes too close together. The list goes on.
Breathe.
Instead of shaming yourself, understand that often we are just yearning to have someone ask “Are you okay? How can I help”. Help your body instead of punishing it. This doesn’t always look like eating “healthy”. No matter the choice, you aren’t guilty for anything. If you partook in a behaviour that didn’t help you, how can you prepare to help yourself better in the future with similar conditions?
Our behaviours need to align with our values. If you believe it will help, why do feel it will? What value does it align with 🤔

During Springtime, there’s always lots of questions about immunity (often due to allergies), sports performance (due to increase outdoor activity), and skin health (due to changes in moisture in the weather and increased sun exposure). Vitamin E is crucial for immune function, skin health, and cell protection from oxidative stress. Deficiency can occur due to inadequate intake, fat malabsorption issues (bowel-related disease such as Crohn’s disease), or genetic conditions affecting absorption. Symptoms may include muscle weakness, vision problems, and nerve damage. To improve deficiency, focus on consuming vitamin E-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and leafy greens, and consider supplements under medical guidance if necessary. Often vitamin E works best when paired with other healthy foods like ones rich in vitamin D, vitamin C, and omega-3 to reduce inflammatory responses and even improve memory!

Is your body sabotaging your diet or is your diet sabotaging your body? 🧐

Repeat after me:
My body is always trying to keep me safe
My body is always trying to keep me safe
My body is always trying to keep me safe

If you eat something sweet and feel you can’t stop - let’s:
1. Get curious about this
2. Ditch the shame/guilt spiral when we finish the sleeve (or box) of Oreos

Our bodies show their needs in certain ways.
It is not your fault.
You did not fail.
You do not lack willpower.
You do not need to “get on track” tomorrow.

Work with someone that wants to move past shallow diet plans and actually uncover the root cause of your eating patterns. Visit the link in bio for resources and finding a dietitian that suits you best!

The “pleasure principle” is the instinctual wiring to seek pleasure and avoid pain in order to satisfy biological and psychological needs. This means that simply trying to remove yummy foods from your diet altogether is destined to leave you feeling unmotivated.
Think about incorporating these foods intentionally rather than randomly.
Think about meals that could be in between a take-out meal and homemade meal (fast food burger with an apple you bring from home)
Think about what meals are less balanced that leave you craving more (hint: you likely aren’t addicted to sugar)
Think about how long you are going without food and how much you are thinking about food between meals. Are you constantly denying yourself.

Listen, let’s talk deprivation mindset.
It refers to the feeling of being deprived (duh) or having a need unmet, often leading to intense cravings, desires, or impulsivity when that item becomes available or when our bodies fall into previous “ineffective neural pathways” (unconscious habits).
Deprivation is strongly linked to maladaptive coping mechanisms around eating including: binge eating, emotional eating, preoccupation with food, restrictive diets, and compulsive exercise.
Deprivation can be out of our control in certain areas, however, trying a “deprivation audit” can help identify where maladaptive habits are leading to further deprivation. This involves speaking with someone trained in disordered eating that can give you the space to identify your own personal triggers, thought patterns, social influences, and emotional responses related to your behaviours. You can also learn ways to progress towards an “abundance mindset” with mindfulness-based skills.
