Do you ever feel overwhelmed making certain decisions? Maybe you find yourself over-analyzing or overthinking a situation or opportunity that results in decision paralysis - which, no decision, is still a decision ;)
Here are 3 questions you can ask yourself when making professional decisions.
#1. Is this an opportunity I’m interested in, and if so, what’s contributing to me wanting to say “yes?”
💛 It’s important to understand what motivates you to say “yes” to an opportunity. Let me explain why.
It can be easy to say yes to opportunities or requests out of a sense of obligation, a need to prove yourself, or people-pleasing.
If it’s driven by one of these things, you could be at risk of being overworked, resentment could build, and, at worst, you could experience burnout—Versus when the decision is rooted in a genuine interest or desire to be of service.
That’s why pausing and reflecting is key. It gives you the clarity you need and can be the difference between thriving and not thriving.
#2. Can I balance this opportunity with my current workload, goals, or other things that are important to me?
đź’› Understanding how a decision will impact us is important. It allows you to be as informed as possible during the decision-making process.
I say that because there is always the chance that you’ll discover things in hindsight, so it’s about making a decision with the best information you have.
Approaching decision-making with this philosophy reduces self-criticism and self-judgment if you realize after the fact that an alternative decision would have been better.
After all, we’re human, and so none of us can have it all figured out ;)
#3. Is this opportunity aligned with my values?
💛 Values help to inform how you want to live and give your life meaning. They’re essentially your compass. When you live life in alignment with your values, you’re able to create a life that’s more fulfilling and meaningful. You experience more happiness. .
That’s why knowing your values and whether they’re activated in your day-to-day life or the opportunities presented to you is important. Again, it can be the difference between thriving or not thriving.
Okay, it’s your turn.
👉 What’s something you’ve been mulling over and haven’t made a decision about or find yourself stuck on?
Apply these same three questions and see what clarity you get. Sometimes, it does take more introspection, but this is a good start!
