🗺️ When 2 Words Collide 👂🏾

It feels serendipitous that International Audiology Day and World Mental Health Day fall on the same day 🗺️👂🏾🦻🏼

Mental and Hearing Health walk hand in hand. Struggling with untreated hearing loss not only impacts your long-term cognitive health, but it can also greatly affect our emotional and mental health.
When people choose not to seek help or talk openly about their untreated hearing loss, they can start to isolate themselves, turn down social interactions, and create a smaller and lonelier life for themselves.
This is a slippery slope, and the last one we want to see our friends and family fall down.

Today and every day, we will advocate for and normalize addressing our hearing health and mental health!
Let’s start taking care of ourselves and our loved ones and stop worrying about outdated stigmas.

Windows to Our Soul Or❓
New research indicates a connection between eye and ear microvasculature health, suggesting that damage to the small blood vessels in the retina 👁️👁️ (eyes) is associated with hearing loss 👂🏾👂🏽, and healthier retinal blood vessels are linked to better hearing.

This connection may stem from shared microvascular characteristics between the inner ear and eye, with the eye acting as a potential indicator of overall small blood vessel health, or it could relate to common underlying conditions like autoimmune diseases or cardiovascular risk factors 🤔.

The more we learn about our bodies’ overall health and well-being, the better equipped we are to live a long and healthy life.
Our bodies 🧍🏽‍♀️ are designed to communicate as a whole. While that’s incredibly valuable, we don’t always know how to interpret the information or recognize the messages that we’re being given through aches 🤕, pains 👂🏾, hearing loss, mental load 🧠, etc.

This is why we value our relationships with other healthcare 🩺👩🏻‍⚕️ professionals and connecting with doctors in all medical fields. The more we know, the more we can share and care for our patients and their families.

The More You Know, The Bigger Your Circle Can Grow 🫶🏼
Inclusion and kindness go hand in hand and neither are hard if you expand your mind a little. Many deaf and hard of hearing people go through their day with a disability that can look invisible to an onlooker. Unfortunately this can make you feel invisible and isolated.

As a society we can make a difference by being the change we want to see and it starts small! Here are some signs in ASL that fit perfect with all the pumpkin spice 🎃 and everything nice this fall.

THIS ⬇️ Hearing loss isn’t black ⚫️ and white⚪️; it isn’t as simple as “I can’t hear at all” or “I can hear everything.” Clarity, strain, and natural assumptions all come into play. How hard is it for you and your brain 🧠 to understand and comprehend what is being said during a group 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒conversation, or if someone is talking to you but isn’t looking at you, or if there is background noise 🎶? Are you missing words? Is your brain 🧠 having to fill in the blanks? Are you nodding and agreeing because technically you “can hear” even if you aren’t fully understanding each word? Hate to break it to you, but you’re likely experiencing a form of hearing👂🏾loss, and by ignoring or denying this reality, you are putting your cognitive health at risk. The bright side: you’ve got us! www.hearingloss.ca

Truth & Reconciliation 🧡🧡
Not just a day, but a daily commitment.

If you’re unfamiliar with the significance of September 30th and the reason we wear orange, or if you haven’t heard Phyllis’ story, we encourage you to invest your time and heart into learning about her story and to improve your understanding on the impact the residential school system had and continues to have on families 🧡🔸🧡
Phyllis’ story like countless others serve as a poignant reminder of the countless children who were separated from their families and subjected to the traumas of residential schools.
These institutions symbolize a painful chapter in our history; confronting this reality can be challenging for many. Yet, it is essential to engage with these difficult topics in the spirit of continuous learning and reconciliation.

In 2013, during the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion in Williams Lake, Phyllis bravely shared her story with attendees, leading to the establishment of Orange Shirt Day.

“I went to the Mission for one school year in 1973/1974. I had just turned 6 years old. I lived with my grandmother on the Dog Creek reserve. We never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to the Mission school.
I remember going to Robinson’s store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exciting - just like I felt to be going to school!
When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared.”
-Phyllis

September Is Concussion Awareness Month 🧠💜👂🏾

We believe in providing the best full circle care with our patients, our bodies are connected and so are we!
We work closely with 🩺 family physicians in our communities to help concussion sufferers get back on their feet quickly.
We’re also extremely proud to work together with the 🧠🧠 .concussion Canadian Sport Institute Calgary, Benson Concussion Institute and Group 23 Sports Medicine to help athletes recover from concussions.

If you’ve suffered a head injury 🤕 and are experiencing any of these symptoms, a comprehensive audiological evaluation is recommended.
Similarly, if you’ve been diagnosed with a cortical concussion (or suspect a cortical concussion) and your symptoms have persisted beyond 7-10 days, a comprehensive audiological evaluation is recommended.

At the Hearing Loss Clinic, we have a specialized concussion protocol to determine any potential issues with your hearing or balance systems following a head injury.
This protocol includes a comprehensive evaluation and is designed to help confirm or rule out any potential hearing issues or vestibular and central auditory processing disorders.

The results of this assessment, including any diagnoses, treatment or referral recommendations, can be shared with your physician, physiotherapist or other healthcare providers to ensure you receive timely and proper rehabilitative care and treatment.
