I just learnt this term thanks to some gen-Z’ers educated little ole me. 👵

However, seeing the effect that drinking alcohol has on people with anxiety is something I work with people on in sessions all the time.

Sooo many people use alcohol to lessen or completely numb anxious feelings, whether that be to navigate social settings better, or just to quiet your busy mind.

What’s less commonly understood is that alcohol has a rebound effect the next day where it worsens anxiety. Not fun at all! For some people, this leads them to drink again and a bad cycle is created.

I’ve outlined some ways to lessen hangxiety once it’s set in.

Sick of beating yourself up! Read on..

Many times we think that self-criticism is motivating or “keeps us in line.” In reality, it perpetuates deep shame that keeps us stuck. To truly get out of this vicious cycle, try learning about self-compassion. I recommend following

Start by considering how you’d talk to a friend about the same issue.

Develop awareness and acknowledge your thoughts and feelings without judgement.

Self-compassion is a practice, and needs lots of repetition to stick. Just keep going!

You’ve got this!

I’m here to raise awareness today about a topic not well known about or discussed. Postpartum psychosis is a serious condition that happens in 1 out of 1000 births. It’s NOT the same thing as having intrusive thoughts about harming your child that are distressing to have.

Take the time to learn more about this condition, especially if you work with new moms.

Don’t be fooled by the common belief that anxiety is just something that you have to tolerate or incorporate into your life.

Anxiety is highly treatable and responds very well to evidence-based therapies.

Here are my top tips on finding relief👇

🌟Make sure you’re seeing an anxiety specialist.
🌟Check that you’re noticing improvements from week to week.
🌟Change should be seen relatively quickly.
🌟Ensure your therapy is strategy based, (such as exposure, reducing, avoidance, and relapse prevention) rather than just talking about your stress of the current week.
🌟As anxiety begins to remit, you should notice more free time & energy to dedicate to the things that really matter.

When you think of panic or anxiety symptoms, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people then you’re probably aware of having a racing heart, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, and maybe even chest pain.

However, there are a host of other symptoms that we tend to overlook or forget about completely.

See the list and let me know if you can relate to any of these. Of course, each of these symptoms alone could reflect so many different things. Yet, when a few of them run together, it’s worth examining if it could be a reaction to a perceived threat or fear cue.

Can you think of any other anxiety symptoms?

This holiday season, pause and reflect on how you might try things differently. In the name of sanity and calm, here’s what I came up with for a to-do list over the upcoming holidays.

Hope it’s helpful!

1. Say “No” to everything that’s not essential. There are always additional things to pile on but if we dig deep a lot of it is based on tradition or expectation (yours or others). It’s okay to change things up sometimes or let go of all the extras.

2. Take alone time – seriously! The overstimulation is real during this season. How can you carve out space and time to be alone and do something that nurtures you. Taking self-care in this way can allow you to be more present, connected, and grounded with others in your life. You are just as important as everyone else around you!

3. Maintain routine – aka sanity. This is really important for kids and often for us big kids too. Of course, with travel and family or friend gatherings, we may need to be flexible. And we still want to keep some structure and predictability to the extent we can.

4. Focus on me – All I can control is yourself and your needs. It’s your responsibility to take care of your side of the fence. Whatever is going on with others around you is not your responsibility or your job to fix. You can still be loving, and not take on what is not yours.

5. Let go – of expectations, the need for things to be perfect, rigid beliefs, and managing other people. Focus on accepting the reality as it is.

6. Release guilt – realize the “shoulds” in your mind that are taking you away from this moment and causing you distress. Acknowledge that you’re just doing the best you can this year, given all the circumstances at play. Delegate tasks, ask for help, and stop overextending yourself.

Let me know what stands out for you and what you might adopt this year.

Just for today, I invite you to practice stepping into discomfort in order to grow, and work towards becoming your desired version of yourself.

Be aware of all the ways you’re self-sabotaging yourself.

Silence your inner critic.

Just for today, stand tall and be proud to be you, authentically you.

When those pesky thoughts get in the way of living, remind yourself that thoughts are just that, thoughts. Sometimes they’re just meaningless information, even when they seems so real and relevant. Find freedom in letting thoughts pass without trying to control them.
