🌿 Allergy Eyes? Here’s What Actually Helps

Spring in Calgary often means itchy, red, watery eyes. Many people assume it’s an infection—but in many cases it’s seasonal eye allergies.

Here’s a quick guide our team uses to help patients manage symptoms safely.

Common allergy eye symptoms
• Itchy eyes
• Redness
• Watery discharge
• Mild eyelid puffiness

Vision should stay clear, and discharge is usually watery (not thick or yellow).

Simple things that usually help
✔ Non-drowsy antihistamines like loratadine or fexofenadine
✔ Allergy eye drops with ketotifen (e.g., Zaditor / Alaway) twice daily
✔ Cold compress for 5–10 minutes
✔ Avoid rubbing your eyes
✔ Keep windows closed on high-pollen days

Contact lens wearers
If allergies start acting up, switch to glasses for a few days and use preservative-free rewetting drops.

⚠️ When to see an eye doctor the same day
• Eye pain
• Light sensitivity
• Sudden blurred vision
• Thick yellow discharge
