Strength vs. Neck Function - The ability to stabilize the head when an impact occurs in contact sports is an important distinction. Strength in a particular motion does not often transfer directly to complex skills requiring varied motor abilities i.e. contact sports. Not all neck exercises are equal in producing the same degree of stabilization in the neck. A neck extension machine confines the athlete to one plane of motion which fails to reduce angular acceleration or improve stability in a 3D environment. Whereas, properly performed neck harness exercises produce far superior results.
The RAM4 Test allows us to analyze exactly how the neck is responding and should be part of every protocol.
