Injuries happen fast and without a lot of warning. Even if you have ridden a mountain bike trail dozens of times and know it like the back of your hand crashes can happen. Just over a year ago Nicole Hunter sustained a really bad ankle sprain (picture included) that required a ton of rehab and home exercises. Proprioception, is the fancy term meaning the “perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body”. For the lower leg it usually means that our balance system is not working well. When you injure any joint the proprioception can become impaired. The good news is that if you work it and do balance exercises and weight bearing exercises you can retrain this system. Functional ways to rehab the lower leg are hiking and walking on uneven ground. Things you can do to transition to functional activities can include bracing, taping, supportive footwear and hiking poles. The key to all rehab is keep moving and use those joints. We are blessed with the mountains and beautiful scenery here in Southern Alberta. The fitness centres are not open yet and the kids sports programs are cancelled or delayed. My kids sometimes believe they are cursed having two physios as parents. My kids know that we always say, “There is always a mountain to climb and descend on bike or hike. We Are Back! We will be resuming in person physiotherapy sessions. You can start booking online for the week of May 11th. While the Provincial Government said we could open May 4th we wanted to ensure we have enough time to do it right. We are organizing staffing and may be able to see some patients at the end of next week. Please call 403-243-5004 to check for availability (you cannot book online for the end of next week). We are reducing the number of people in the clinic and extending the treatment time for each session. We have not seen all of you in at least a couple of months and it will take longer to address all of problem areas and allow us to be thorough. Your physio and support staff will be wearing masks. If you have a mask we ask you to wear it in the clinic. We are trying not to utilize the waiting room area to ensure physical distancing. Please arrive for your appointment on time and we will direct you to a room. In the interest of minimizing contact only the patient and necessary caregivers/guardians and Marda Loop staff will be allowed in the clinic. There are 4 sinks in the clinic to wash hands and there is also hand sanitizer in every room and at the front desk.

If you are not comfortable with seeing us for in clinic treatment we are still available for Virtual Physiotherapy sessions, otherwise known as Telehealth. Marda Loop's physiotherapists have an immense knowledge base and an ability to talk through your history, assess you and provide education, exercises and resources to help you start and progress your rehabilitation.

Are you opening May 4th?
What we know so far about re-opening Marda Loop Physiotherapy for in person assessment and treatment is that we are in a holding pattern. We are waiting for additional information and orders from our College and the Chief Medical Officer of Health. While it is exciting to talk about re-opening we want to ensure that we are doing everything to be as safe and smart as we can. For now the clinic is closed for all but urgent in-person services. Today April 9th is Vimy Ridge Day. On the Scout trip this summer the Troop where Paul and Nicole are leaders took the youth to Vimy Ridge. The Battle of Vimy Ridge took place on April 9-12, 1917 and helped define Canada as a nation. It was a victory that exacted a terrible cost with over 10,000 Canadians killed or wounded. Behind me is the Vimy Monument on Hill 145. It was here that the Canadians captured the area with a frontal bayonet charge against machine gun nests. It was an eye opening experience for the youth to see that soldiers not much older than them fought, hunkered in trenches, killed people the same age and buried their friends. It was sobering experience to imagine the terror and brutality of war. Our visit to Vimy was a somber reminder to never forget the sacrifice so many people and families paid for the freedom that we enjoy. Although our new reality is tough we have a world united to help defeat an unseen foe. Stay healthy, stay safe and never forget. #vimy #vimyridge @ Canadian National Vimy Memorial

Milk jug workout. We have had numerous calls asking if we are renting or selling the clinic weights. Here are some suggestions if you don’t have hand weights. Glute Bridging with a Kick Out. Great for hip, back and core! There are numerous variations of this exercise. You can make this harder by tying an exercise band around your thighs, raising your hands off the mat or putting something unstable under the supporting foot such as a rolled up towel. *great thing about physical distancing is that I crank 70’s @ 80’s hard rock and metal and no one complains. **yesterday was 90’s grunge #physiodistancing #yycsport #yycsportphysio
