Your doctor might order an MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound if you’re experiencing pain, swelling, limited movement, or a suspected injury involving your muscles, tendons, ligaments, or joints.

Some common reasons include:

Suspected tendon or ligament injury (like a tear or strain)
Swelling or fluid around a joint
Muscle pain that isn’t going away
Numbness or tingling that could be nerve-related
Monitoring healing

It’s a safe and non-invasive way to help figure out what’s going on and what treatment might be best. Your doctor will recommend it when it’s the right tool to get the answers they need.

MSK ultrasound uses sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. What makes it unique is that it can capture movement — so we can assess how structures behave while you move or when pressure is applied.

Here’s how it compares to other imaging tools:

X-rays show bones well but don’t capture soft tissues.

CT scans offer detailed images but involve radiation.

MRIs are great for deep or complex anatomy and offer high detail, but they’re done with the body still.

MSK ultrasound is dynamic, doesn’t use radiation, and is often more accessible for evaluating soft tissue injuries close to the surface.

Each test has its own strengths — your provider will choose the one that fits your specific needs.

MSK (musculoskeletal) ultrasound can help evaluate a wide range of conditions involving muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues. Some common examples include:

Tendon injuries – like tears or tendinitis (e.g., rotator cuff, Achilles tendon)

Muscle tears

Ligament ruptures

Bursitis – inflammation of fluid-filled sacs around joints

Joint effusion – fluid buildup in joints

Nerve entrapments – such as carpal tunnel syndrome

Cysts or soft tissue masses

Foreign bodies – like splinters or glass under the skin

Because it allows real-time imaging, it can also be used to guide injections or procedures directly into joints or soft tissues such as pain management.

Not exactly. While all three are imaging tools, they each work in different ways and are used for different reasons:

X-rays are typically used to look at bones and can help detect fractures or joint issues.

MRIs provide very detailed images of both soft tissues and bones and are often used for deeper or more complex concerns.

MSK ultrasound is great for viewing muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints in motion, especially at or near the surface of the body.

Each test has its strengths, and your healthcare provider will recommend the one that’s most appropriate for your specific situation.
