A wonderful Dr. of Naturopathic Medicine :)

My decision to become a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) came after two unrelated events:
1. A friend’s mom told me that a Naturopathic Doctor had increased the quality of life for their daughter, who had aggressive leukemia as a child. This was the first time I had heard of a Naturopathic Doctor (I was 19 at the time), so naturally I was curious! 🧐 But I wasn’t ready to commit yet.
2. Then, years later, my university professor in 3rd year biochem introduced me to the concept of a herb-drug interaction. 🤯 You mean herbs can actually do something? Could they help me? Why had no one talked about this before? And if I didn’t know this, then what else didn’t I know?

I chased down my professor with a million questions after that class, and he referred me to the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine . I applied later that same year.

Fast forward to today and here I am, 11 years later, living the good life as a ND👩‍⚕️ and doing my best to spread little pieces of good in the world. (Stay tuned for HOW I do that in future posts 😉)

When I look back on my career, the funny thing is that I always said that even if I never worked a day in my life, becoming a Naturopathic Doctor was an investment in myself and my future family’s health. (And it delivered! I’ve never felt more beautiful and alive than I do now, and I have two incredible tiny humans who I treasure and feel confident caring for.) BUT... to now know that all the hard work and training didn’t end up being “just for me” is the real gift. I’ve been fortunate to turn my childhood struggles into a career that helps amazing people live their best lives too. YOU are what drives my path forward from here, and inspire me to raise the bar of health care delivery. I am far from perfect, and there are obstacles in my way for sure. But every person I meet helps shape the doctor I become. And I couldn’t do this without you.

So in the end, my “why” is simple:
Be the doctor I was always looking for. Because someone else is probably looking for her too.

What does it mean to truly listen?

"If you look into the traditional form of the Chinese character for listen, you’ll see it’s made up of the characters for ear, eyes, and heart. It’s a multi-sensory experience. And there’s another twist, as the character for heart is also the character for mind. Listening, then, is more than taking in the sound of the outside world; listening is also about the resonances struck with your inner world." _ Michael Max

Home Questions are a key aspect of helping us to understand how to help our patients. In school we learn the classic 10 questions. But asking useful questions in clinic goes far beyond the basic 10 and what’s more our lines of questioning are not about creating conversation, but able sifting through a ...
