This International Volunteer Day, we celebrated the amazing people who make The Alex shine✨

We’re sharing a few festive moments from our recent volunteer holiday party as a small way to say a big thank you. From food, music, and games to heartfelt speeches (and a little karaoke 🎤), it was a joyful evening celebrating the volunteers who make a difference across all corners of The Alex.

Tonight marks the longest night of the year in Calgary.
The winter solstice is a reminder of how deeply light, warmth, and community matter during the coldest months.

Each year, our city also recognizes this night as a time to honour people who have lost their lives while living without safe or stable housing. It is a quiet moment to reflect on the realities of housing insecurity, the risks of extreme weather, and the importance of seeing every life as worthy of dignity, care, and remembrance.

This night calls us to pay attention, to learn, and to keep working toward a community where no one is left out in the cold.

Thank you for holding space, starting conversations, and standing with neighbours who are most affected by long nights and harsh winters.

Melanie brings decades of experience in community engagement, marketing, communications, and alumni relations, having held leadership roles at MRU, NAIT, and other institutions. From developing strategic plans and leading major marketing campaigns to guiding teams through challenges, she has a proven track record of building strong connections and driving meaningful impact.

Her passion for fostering relationships with colleagues, partners, and communities aligns perfectly with The Alex’s mission. Melanie’s insight, energy, and dedication will help us continue to grow our programs, strengthen community ties, and make a lasting difference in the lives of Calgarians.
