At The Alex, we envision a Canada where everyone has the means and knowledge to access good, healthy food in a dignified way—an effort that requires an entire community. A leader in meeting our shared goals are our longtime partners at the RBC Foundation.

Thank you for supporting our Local Food Security Solutions project at our Community Food Centre. We’re aligned with goals to improve people’s access to affordable food and enhance their financial literacy through innovative food skills programming.

When we unite through our Fresh and Fare Community Market, and food skills programs, we’re able to help address issues associated with poverty and food insecurity in Calgary.

This National Nursing Week, we are recognizing the incredible nurses of The Alex and the care they bring to our community each and every day. 💙

At The Alex, our nurses do so much more than provide medical care. They listen without judgment, advocate for people who need support, build trust during difficult moments, and help create spaces where people feel safe, respected, and welcomed.

They meet people where they are, whether in our health centres, housing programs, outreach services, or community spaces. Through skill, compassion, patience, and dedication, they help people navigate not only health challenges, but also some of life’s most difficult circumstances.

Their work changes lives in ways that are both visible and invisible, and our community is stronger because of it.

To all of our nurses, thank you for showing up with kindness, empathy, and unwavering care. We are so grateful for everything you do.

Happy National Nursing Week! 💙

This week, The Alex welcomed community, business, and civic leaders to the Calgary Petroleum Club for a meaningful conversation about Calgary’s future.

The Fireside Chat with Mayor Jeromy "Pathfinder" Farkas explored important issues impacting our city, including housing, mental health, addictions, healthcare access, affordability, and the growing pressures facing community organizations.

Moderated by Joy Bowen-Eyre and Deborah Yedlin, the discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration, prevention-focused care, and investing in healthier communities for all Calgarians.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation, including Elder Jackie Bromley, and to the many Alexeans whose work continues to make a difference across Calgary every day 💙

On May 5, Red Dress Day marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.

Across Canada, red dresses hang in trees, windows, and gathering spaces, moving with the wind, empty yet heavy with meaning. Each one marks a life taken, a presence that should still be here.

Red was chosen with intention. Many Indigenous teachings share that red is the colour spirits can see. These dresses are not only symbols for the living, but signals to those who are gone: you are seen, you are remembered.

The emptiness is deliberate. It confronts us with what is missing, not numbers, but daughters, mothers, aunties, sisters, and friends.

This crisis is rooted in colonialism, systemic inequities, and racism that continue to shape outcomes today. Naming that truth matters.

And still, there is strength. Families, survivors, and communities continue to carry grief while demanding justice. They remember. They speak. They persist.

Take time today to reflect, to listen, and to learn.

Mental health touches every part of life. 💚

It lives in the moments we rest, the people we lean on, the support we receive, and the hope we hold onto during hard times.

At The Alex Community Health Centre, we know well-being is shaped by more than healthcare alone. Housing, food, connection, safety, and belonging all matter too.

That’s why we believe in caring for the whole person and walking alongside people with compassion and practical support.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we invite everyone to choose one small act of care — check in with a friend, take a pause, ask for support, or offer kindness to yourself. Small moments can create real change.

You do not have to carry everything on your own. Support matters, and connection helps.

People of The Alex | Behind the Scenes with our Medical Office Assistants 💙

When clients walk into The Alex Community Health Centre, one of the first friendly faces they often meet is a Medical Office Assistant (MOA).

Our MOAs do so much more than greet clients or answer phones. They help people access care, coordinate appointments, support providers, and keep clinics running smoothly behind the scenes.

They are often the first connection for someone who may be feeling unsure or going through a difficult time and that warm welcome can make all the difference.

As Courtney from our Youth Health Centre says:
“Watching clients grow, succeed, and feel supported is the most rewarding part of this role.”

Thank you to our MOAs for the care, kindness, and dedication you bring every day.

For Susan and Peter Ziriada, their passion for volunteering runs deep.

Every Tuesday, they arrive at The Alex to volunteer during breakfast in our Community Kitchen. Susan serves meals to clients, and Peter washes up.

Then, on Thursdays, they both run our Senior’s Fitness Class as well.
“The vibe here is tremendous,” Peter said. “The people working here, their smiles, friendliness and welcoming nature are infectious. I want to be a part of it.”

Susan said they look forward to helping at The Alex every week.
“Part of it is being a good role model, but we get more out of it than we give,” she said.

Individuals like them remind us that every act of support counts. Their dedication shows how peoples’ efforts can create a meaningful, lasting impact in our community.

As we mark National Volunteer Week, we know the work we do at The Alex simply wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers. Among them, the team at SMP Engineering stands out for the energy and care they bring.

We were equally as excited to learn why they volunteer with The Alex.

“Our relationship with The Alex began with a shared belief in building stronger, healthier communities. Since our initial $41,622 contribution to The Alex at our biennial charity event, Mini Putt 2024, our team has been proud to stay actively involved with The Alex initiatives.”

“Whether that’s preparing meals in the Community Kitchen or supporting inclusive events like the Calgary Pride Parade, volunteering with The Alex allows us to turn that commitment into action. We’re grateful to be part of work that makes a meaningful difference every day.”
