The World Health Organization (WHO)’s theme this year, Changing the Narrative on Su***de, challenges us to move from silence to support and from stigma to compassion. Su***de is not inevitable. It is preventable. Together, we can create environments where people feel safe to speak up and reach out.

At The Alex, we walk alongside people every day with mental health services, crisis supports, and community programs that make care more accessible and compassionate. Structural change matters too. Shifting systems ensures no one is left without help when they need it most.

Back-to-school is exciting, but it can also bring stress for students, youth, and families. At The Alex, we make sure no one faces it alone. 💜

Our Youth Health Centre provides free and confidential care for ages 12 to 24. This includes mental health counselling, sexual health services, primary care, and support navigating health systems.

We also bring wellness services into schools, connect youth to resources for housing, food security, and mental health, and work with educators to create safe and supportive spaces. Families can access wraparound supports such as counselling, food programs, housing help, and financial literacy resources.

With the right support, youth and families can feel confident, cared for, and ready to thrive.

On this International Overdose Awareness Day, we unite to honor those we've lost and reaffirm that recovery is a journey best traveled together. Each step forward is a testament to resilience, community, and the unwavering belief that healing is possible.

In 2024, Alberta experienced a significant loss, with 1,706 opioid-related deaths, marking a 24% increase from the previous year. The majority of these deaths involved fentanyl, underscoring the persistent dangers of the toxic drug supply. Yet, amidst this crisis, there is hope. Naloxone remains a vital tool in saving lives, available for free at pharmacies and easy to administer. Taking a moment to learn how to use it could make all the difference.

At The Alex, we stand with you—no judgment, no barriers, just support. Since June 2021, we've connected with over 26,820 individuals, providing safe supplies and linking them to addiction services. You are not alone.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, please reach out. Together, we can create a community where recovery is not just possible, but supported.

One of the newest residents at Prelude, a housing program at The Alex, finally has a place to call home.

Our Housing team had been trying for months to connect with him, often losing touch. When one of our case managers finally met him at a youth shelter downtown, he had been living on the streets with only a duffle bag and his stuffed bear, “Squirtle.”

The moment he stepped into his new suite, he paused, looked around, and then burst into tears. “Squirtle, we’re home,” he whispered, hugging his turtle on his brand-new bed.

This is exactly why our Housing team does what they do, providing safe spaces and real homes for those who need them most. 💜

Our amazing friends from SMP Engineering stopped by The Alex recently, this time ready to get creative! 🎨💖

They spent the day helping us make the beautiful decorations and props we’ll be taking to the Calgary Pride Parade. Seeing their creativity come to life and the joy they brought to the room was absolutely heartwarming.

We loved every minute with them and are so grateful for their time and all the love they put into these creations. Thank you, SMP, for making our Pride prep extra special! 🌈✨

At The Alex, we know that the people who give so much of themselves to care for our community deserve care in return. 💜

We often bring wellness initiatives to our staff, and this massage session was a special one. ✨

Thanks to the students and instructors from Alberta College of Massage Therapy, our team was able to pause, recharge, and feel truly appreciated. The room was filled with smiles and gratitude, and it reminded us that taking a break is just as important as giving back.

A heartfelt thank you to ACMT for sharing your time and talents with us!
