For the people who arrive at our door seeking care, that first moment of welcome at The Alex matters more than anything. Our team meets their courage with unwavering dedication, standing alongside people every step of the way.

For us to keep on this path, providing health, home and social services to at risk individuals and families in Calgary, it takes a community of donors and partners behind us.

To the team at GreenShield, thank you. Your support of our work at The Alex helps people end up where they need to be.

At The Alex, we know health is more than just physical care.
It’s feeling supported, safe, and connected.

It can be balance.
It can be community.
Sometimes, it’s simply getting through the day.

“Health to me means balance, taking care of my body, mind, and the community around me.”
— Allison Thornton, Mental Health Clinician Practice Supervisor, The Alex

This week invited reflection on National Indigenous Languages Day and on the role language plays in shaping identity, belonging, and connection to community.

Indigenous languages hold knowledge that cannot be translated.
They carry stories, teachings, humour, and ways of seeing the world that have been passed from generation to generation.

Across these lands, more than 70 distinct Indigenous languages continue to live and evolve. Many are being revitalized through the leadership of Elders, Knowledge Keepers, language teachers, and youth. This work exists alongside a history that attempted to silence these voices, and that reality still shapes the present.

Here in Calgary, on the lands of the Siksiká, Tsuut’ina, and Métis peoples, these languages remain deeply rooted in community, culture, and place.

At The Alex, this understanding shapes how we think about care.

🧡Care means listening with intention.
🧡Care means making space for culture and language.
🧡Care means recognizing that healing, identity, and language are deeply connected.

We are grateful to continue learning and to be part of a community where these languages are honoured and carried forward.

At The Alex, wraparound care isn’t just a buzzword. It’s how we support the whole person — their health, their community, and their life.

It means connecting services across teams, empowering clients as partners in their care, and making sure no one ever feels passed from one department to another.

Fragmented care leaves people behind. Wraparound care helps us see the person behind the health issue and address the root causes, not just the symptoms.

“Wraparound care isn’t just about services. It’s about creating a community of support; around each person, every step of the way.”

Today on World Oral Health Day, we’re reminded that oral health is primary health.

The mouth is more than teeth and gums. It affects how we eat, speak, connect, and care for ourselves. Poor oral health isn’t just uncomfortable; it’s linked to chronic disease, nutrition, and overall well-being.

Yet oral health is often overlooked in broader health strategies. World Oral Health Day isn’t just about brushing and flossing. It’s a call to:
• treat the mouth as part of whole-body health
• support access to preventive, community-based care
• integrate dental care into primary health systems

When oral health thrives, people thrive. Let’s make sure it’s always recognized as essential.

Recovery isn’t just about appointments or treatment plans. It’s about feeling safe, seen, and accepted for who you are.

But stigma gets in the way.

It shows up in small comments, assumptions, or the way people are treated differently for asking for help. Over time, that can make someone feel like they have to shrink themselves or stay silent.

And when people don’t feel like they belong, recovery becomes so much harder.

The good news is, we can all be part of changing that.

A kind interaction. A moment of listening. Choosing empathy over judgment. These things matter more than we think.

Because belonging isn’t extra. It’s essential.

Let’s keep creating spaces where people feel welcome, supported, and valued just as they are.

Today is World Social Work Day, and we want to give a huge shoutout to the amazing social workers at The Alex!

Social work isn’t always visible but its impact is everywhere. Every day, our social workers help people access housing, navigate tough systems, and connect with the care they need. They show up with heart, skill, and a commitment to making life a little easier for everyone in our community.

To our social workers: we see you, we value you, and we celebrate you today! 💬💙

Drop a comment, share a story, or simply say thank you to a social worker who’s made a difference in your life. 🙌

At The Alex, our programs happen everywhere, at the YHC, CFC, CHC, and across all our locations. Each program is designed to support people, build skills, and foster connection. But until now, finding the right program often meant checking multiple calendars, one location at a time.

We wanted to change that. Our new program calendar brings everything together in one place. You can filter by location or interest, explore what is available, and plan your month with ease.

It is more than a schedule. It is a way to see the full breadth of opportunities to connect, learn, and grow at The Alex.

Words matter at The Alex. More than we sometimes realize. 💬

At our Community Food Centre, the language we use reflects the kind of community we are working to build, one rooted in dignity, belonging, and respect.

That’s why we say “community members” instead of “clients.”

It is a small shift in words, but a powerful one. The people who walk through our doors are not passive recipients of services. They are participants, leaders, neighbours, and co-creators of this community.

Food may bring people through the door, but connection, learning, and leadership are what grow here.

When we cook together, garden together, or share a meal, we are not just providing programs. We are creating spaces where people belong and where everyone has something valuable to contribute.

As one staff member shared, “We try to create a space where everyone belongs… and that starts with how we speak to and about each other.”

Because at The Alex, language is not just communication. It is our values in action. 🤍

Looking for help with disability forms? We’re happy to point you in the right direction.

Medical forms for programs such as Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D), and the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) need to be completed by your regular primary care provider.

If you receive your ongoing care at The Alex Community Health Centre, our team can help support the completion of these forms with you.

If you’re not currently a patient at The Alex, please connect with your family doctor to have the forms filled out. If you need support finding a primary care provider, you can call 811 for assistance.
