Your body perceives skipping meals as stress.

Stress triggers cortisol.

Cortisol raises blood sugar (even if you haven’t eaten).

The result is that you may experience sporadic blood sugar, energy crashes, and a tendency to store more fat when you eat that next meal.

If you want to break the cycle of:

🔁 Carb cravings
🔁 Mood swings
🔁 Brain fog
🔁 Hunger

Maybe it’s time to eat on a regular schedule.

Every person is unique.

And your plan should be too.

Researchers in Tanzania looked at what happened when 77 men changed their diets for just 2 weeks:

▪️One group who normally ate a traditional African diet switched to a Western diet (think processed foods)

▪️ A second group who normally ate a Western diet switched to a traditional African diet (think whole foods)

▪️A third group continued with their usual diet but added a fermented banana drink daily

▪️A small control group made no changes at all

They measured immune function, inflammation, and metabolism, and here’s what they found:

💥 Those who switched to a Western diet had more inflammation, weaker immune responses, and activation of disease-related pathways

✅ Those who adopted the traditional African diet or added the fermented drink saw reduced inflammation.

This is such a powerful example of how quickly our bodies can respond to what we eat.

It’s also why nutrition is always part of the work we do with our clients.

🗞️ New research shows that mindfulness training helps people stay motivated to exercise!

Here are the details of a study from the Centre for Motivation and Behaviour Change at the University of Bath:

✔ Participants were 109 adults in England who were not meeting movement guidelines
✔ All were given a 30-day goal to walk 8,000 steps per day
✔ One group used only a step tracker
✔ The other group used both a step tracker AND a mindfulness program (Medito app), with daily practices focused on body awareness and mindful movement

By the end of the month, both groups had increased their steps, but 👉the mindfulness group exercised 76 minutes more per week and felt more motivated to do so.

If you’re curious to try this out, the Medito app is free.

If you want a personalized plan for better health, comment “READY” and we’ll message you details on getting started at our practice ✨

HOW we eat (vs. WHAT)👇

We talk a lot about what to eat for better health.

But not enough people are talking about how we eat.

A new study from Japan found that eating more slowly was linked to eating less.

The study also found:

✔️ Women naturally ate more slowly and took smaller bites than men
✔️ Listening to calming rhythms helped everyone eat more slowly

Here are some things to try:

🥣 Count your chews per bite (aim for 20)
🍴 Put your fork down between bites
🎶 Play calm music at mealtime
😋 Take smaller bites and savor each!

Some people call this mindful eating.

Will you give it a try?

Intermittent Fasting: Yay or Nay?

Intermittent fasting means eating only within a specific time period each day.

Now a review of 15 studies shows:

✔️ Restricting eating to an 8-hr window leads to fat loss
✔️ Without losing lean muscle mass
✔️ But ONLY when paired with exercise.

So if you’re working on body composition and metabolic health, the strategy matters.

✅ Preserving lean muscle is key
✅ Exercise is non-negotiable

Everyone is unique, and our approach to metabolic health is always personalized.

We follow the science so you don’t have to.

This is backed by science.

Walking after meals helps to:

✔️ Support digestion
✔️ Improve insulin sensitivity
✔️ Keep your metabolism healthy

Studies show that moving your body after eating may be even more effective for metabolism than doing it before a meal—likely because your muscles are using the glucose that’s already in your bloodstream for energy.

It doesn’t have to be intense.

Even a 10-minute walk around the block counts.

This is especially helpful for people who struggle with blood sugar crashes or feel sluggish after meals.

I’d love to know:

Is walking after meals part of your routine?

One of the best things you can do for your metabolism is to start your day with a protein-packed breakfast.

Here’s what that actually looks like:

🍳 5 Eggs
🥤 Protein smoothie
🥣 1.5 cups of Greek yogurt
👩‍🍳 4 slices turkey bacon

This is way more protein than most people manage.

Eating 25-30 grams of protein at breakfast helps to stabilize blood sugar and also…

Support cortisol balance.

Reduce sugar cravings.

Improve focus & energy.

Support muscle mass.

And set you up for long-term metabolic health.

Just remember that nutrition is not one-size-fits-all.

When you’re ready for a personalized plan to optimize your hormones, metabolism, and health, that’s what I’m here for.

If you want a healthy metabolism that keeps you feeling young, energetic, and strong…

We need to talk about strength training.

Skeletal muscles account for about 30% of your basal metabolic rate, which is the calories you burn just by being alive.

And because muscle is metabolically active, it works for you 24/7.

More muscle mass supports:

✔️ Increased insulin sensitivity
✔️ Efficient glucose use
✔️ Boosted mitochondrial function (hello, energy!)
✔️ Hormone balance
✔️ Protection against age-related metabolic decline

After the age of 30, we start to lose muscle mass every year—unless we actively work to maintain and rebuild it.

So strength training?

It’s not just about how you look.

It’s about how you function, age, and feel for the long haul.

Energy crashes or stubborn belly fat?

Yes, these can be metabolism issues, but also…

Underneath that could be 💥stress.

Because when stress goes up, cortisol follows.

And here’s what cortisol does:

▪️ It raises blood sugar (even if you haven’t eaten anything)
▪️ It tells your body to store fat (especially around the belly)
▪️ It triggers cravings for sugar and carbs
▪️ It disrupts sleep, recovery, and hormone balance

Cortisol is helpful in small, short bursts.

But when stress is ongoing, it keeps your blood sugar and metabolism confused.

That’s when you start to feel the ripple effects:

Energy crashes.

Mood swings.

Weight changes.

All the “I’m doing everything right but still feel off” symptoms.

If this sounds familiar, it might be time to take a look at your stress response.

Because even when life feels out of control, we still have tools.

Like movement.

Or journaling.

Or connecting with friends.

Read this 👀 for 5 hidden causes of a sluggish metabolism.

But first:

A sluggish metabolism does not ONLY cause weight gain.

It affects everything from energy and motivation to focus and mood.

Here are some of the hidden causes I often see in practice:

1️⃣ Underactive Thyroid
The thyroid gland is a key regulator of metabolic rate. When it’s underperforming, everything slows down.

2️⃣ Nutrient Insufficiencies
Chromium, B vitamins, magnesium, and others are essential for regulating blood sugar and energy metabolism.

3️⃣ Exposure to Toxins
Environmental toxins and oxidative stress can damage your mitochondria—the tiny powerhouses responsible for turning food into energy.

4️⃣ Insulin Resistance
When cells stop responding well to insulin, it becomes harder to use glucose for energy. You’re left feeling fatigued and more likely to store fat.

5️⃣ Inflammation
Ongoing low-grade inflammation disrupts hormones and interferes with how your cells produce energy.

Our goal in functional medicine is to get to the root cause.

It’s not your job to figure these things out on your own.

It’s ours.

But now that you know…

What will you do with that knowledge?

So many people come to me saying things like:

“My metabolism is broken.”
“I have a sluggish metabolism.”
“I can’t lose weight because of my metabolism.”

But here’s what I tell them:

Metabolism is not just about weight.

It’s the sum of all the chemical reactions in your body.

Which means your metabolism also affects:

✨ Blood sugar (whether you spike and crash or stay steady)
✨ Energy (whether you hit a wall at 3pm or feel good all day)
✨ Brain function (the brain uses 20% of the body’s energy)
✨ Hormone balance, inflammation, and even sleep

So even if weight loss isn’t your goal, supporting a healthy metabolism is still essential for how you feel every single day.

Stick around because I’ve got more posts coming soon with simple, science-backed ways to support your metabolic health.
