In honor of the Season and the Gift in Giving, I ask all of us to stop for a moment and reflect on giving the gift of care and attention to someone in our lives that may be impacted by Alzheimers or Dementia.
This disease is so misunderstood. "They are not the same person anymore", "they don’t know or recognize me", "they’re just gone", even when they are still here is such a sad assumption.
We do not know anything other than the outward appearance or presentation. I assure you that the emotional heart is still beating strongly on the inside. This beautiful heart feels and sends love, even when we are not aware. This beautiful heart also feels pain and sadness when not noticed or left out because we assume an unawareness. This beautiful heart is also afraid because they know things may not be the same and they can’t do anything about it. This beautiful heart holds all the memories that
we still want to share.
Give a gift, not just to your special someone, but to yourself. The receipt of that glimpse of awareness, a memory, or the love is the most wonderful gift you will ever receive. I know because I was able to share that gift with my own mom. So grab a tissue and watch this incredible video about a holiday to remember.
