🦠 With back to school comes alllll the illnesses but not all diarrhea in kids is caused by stomach bugs.

⚠️ Diarrhea is when bowel movements are more frequent, loose, and watery than usual.

💥 In children, sometimes this can be completely normal, sometimes it might mean your kiddo is unwell, and other times there could be more going on to cause these changes in stool frequency and consistency. At Ignite Nutrition we hear it all, as experts in gut health we have the knowledge and tools to help!

Normal bowel habits in kids are:

💩 Kids 3 years of age and older typically have 1-3 bowel movements per day, ideally, they are having at least 1 bowel movement every day – as they grow into teens bowel movements might be once every 2-3 days

💩 Formed, soft, smooth, and easy to pass is the ideal consistency of stool

💩 The colour and thickness of a child’s poops will change depending on what they eat. You will see a noticeable change in colour, smell, thickness, or texture when babies go from breastmilk or formula to cow’s milk and then eventually to solids

**It is important to note that occasionally, changes in stool are normal. A bout of passing stool every other day or having more loose, watery consistency can be normal. It is when this becomes a more chronic, ongoing issue that further investigation might be worth pursuing.

Indications for diarrhea in kids:

💩 Loose, watery, unformed bowel movements or liquid bowel movements
💩 Urgency of getting to the nearest toilet or accidents
💩 Looser stool accompanied by fever, vomiting, nausea

🥔 Have you made our prebiotic potato salad yet?

❓️What's the difference between probiotics and prebiotics you ask?

🦠 Probiotics are the gut-supportive bacteria that live in your digestive tract and keep you healthy.

💥 Prebiotics aren’t living bacteria at all. They are beneficial compounds that act as food for bacteria (and keeps them healthy so they can keep us healthy). Prebiotics are undigestible parts of food that reach the colon without being absorbed in the small intestine. These undigested particles act as fuel for the large quantity of bacteria in the colon. They can be found in a variety of different foods 👇🏼

💥 One type of prebiotic is called resistant starch. This particular prebiotic is found in whole grains, seeds, pulses, green bananas, and potatoes! However, cooking or heating foods can greatly reduce the resistant starch content.

⚠️ BUT we can actually reverse some of that by allowing the foods to cool after cooking them. That’s right! Eating chilled potatoes (like this cold potato salad!), rice, or oatmeal increases the amount of resistant starch they contain.

This is your sign to get those prebiotics in, click here for the recipe: https://ignitenutrition.ca/blog/good-for-your-gut-low-fodmap-potato-salad/

DYK❓️
🌸 Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal disorder that affects approximately 5-15% of women.

‼️Women with PCOS have an excess amount of male reproductive hormones or androgens produced in the ovaries. This leads to a range of symptoms that can include irregular periods, infertility, acne, hair growth, and weight gain.

🧐 Insulin and PCOS
Insulin is an important hormone whose main job is to help glucose, or energy, move from the bloodstream into the cells for use. This is a very important role. As too much glucose in our blood is hard on the body. It can result in poor health outcomes, especially in the long-term.

In this post you'll learn how Hyperinsulinemia (insulin resistance) is responsible for many PCOS symptoms and how dietary modifications could help.

🧐 Have you heard of Sucrase-Isomaltase Deficiency?

SID is a condition where your body has trouble breaking down sucrose (table sugar) and starches (like those in bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes). This happens when the enzymes needed to digest these carbohydrates — sucrase and isomaltase — are either not produced properly or are in short supply.

When your body can’t fully digest these carbohydrates, they ferment in the gut instead, leading to uncomfortable digestive symptoms like:

❗️Bloating and gas
❗️Cramping or abdominal pain
❗️Diarrhea or loose stools
❗️Urgency after eating

⚠️ Because these symptoms are so similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), SID is often misdiagnosed as IBS, especially the diarrhea-predominant type (IBS-D). In fact, recent research suggests that up to 35% of people with IBS-D symptoms may actually have an underlying issue with sucrose digestion.

‼️The elemental diet for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)?

SIBO occurs when there is an abnormal increase of certain types and amounts of bacteria in the small intestine — an area of the gut that normally has relatively low bacterial populations. This overgrowth can lead to a range of digestive symptoms, including bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and changes in bowel habits (both constipation and diarrhea).

❓️We often get questions from patients whether the elemental diet is worth considering - and what the experience is actually like.

🔗 Click the link for how the elemental diet works for SIBO, when it might be used, and how formulations are changing to become more palatable than ever before.
