/// World Breastfeeding Week is a global campaign to raise awareness and galvanize action on themes related to breastfeeding, such as community support, women and work, healthcare systems, education and human rights.

This week I hope we can celebrate the incredible power of our bodies to not only grow a human, but also to make milk - a perfectly balanced, customized to your baby's every need superfood - to nourish them and enable them to grow and thrive.

With support, breastfeeding can be a wonderful experience, for both baby and mom.  It can also be a physically and emotionally painful one.

While this image is an idyllic display of breastfeeding, it is equally important to recognize that most often it doesn't just  happen naturally, and for some it is a huge struggle.  Others may not be able to, and some choose not to.  All are okay.  Everyone is trying to do their best - for their baby, and for themselves.

Successful breastfeeding is a shared responsibility, and support on your breastfeeding journey is a must!  Family and friends supporting your decisions, healthcare professionals with the right information and resources, community groups, breastmilk donation - there is a passionate village out there ready to help you!  It's my goal to do my part in my community to ensure more families are getting the support, education and resources they need to be successful in their breastfeeding goals.

Every babe needs to be fed - and however you do that - you deserve love, support, and respect ❤   Happy world breastfeeding week!

/// Summer time is FAMILY TIME. Longer days, more time outside in the sun, long weekends and vacations, and all the big and little adventures.

Summer time is also a great time to get your whole family in for a chiropractic check up.  Yes - the whole family!  Everyone in your family deserves care to keep their body functioning at its best.

One of my favourite things is when a whole family books their chiro appointments together.

I think the best part is that it's an opportunity to model to our kids the importance of taking care of ourselves.  It's teaching the next generation the value of keeping our bodies moving and feeling well BEFORE there is a problem, and if there is pain or an injury - there is so much that YOU can do to help your body heal and recover stronger without needing medication.

I offer chiropractic care to everyone at every age and stage - pregnant and postpartum mamas, brand new babies, busy toddlers and kids who don't sit still so I adjust them however they're most comfortable (usually playing or coloring).  I help Dads, and teens, busy 20 somethings, new retirees, granparents and seniors.  From days old to 99 years old!  Everyone has a spine and body worth caring for.

If you've been thinking if getting your family in for a chiropractic check up - Summer is such a perfect time.  Come together, relax, and enjoy some quality caring-for-your-family's-wellness-time.

I even offer Saturday appointments - how perfect is that?

/// Pregnant and still wanting to hike this summer?  Sure you can!

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Your center of gravity changes as your belly grows:
🏔 Slow it down on technical terrain to be sure of your footing (sometimes its harder to see your next step with a belly in the way).
🏔 Use hiking poles.
🏔 Wear supportive footwear appropriate for the trail.

Regulate your body temperature:
🏔 Wear lots of layers to help keep you and babe nice and cool.
🏔 Ensure you stay hydrated. (Extra snacks to keep blood sugars balanced are good too)
🏔 Slow it down or stop to rest if the intensity is getting too much.

Check in with your goals:
🏔 It's significantly harder work when you are carrying the added weight of a growing belly.  It's okay to choose adventures with less distance or elevation, it's still an amazing workout and so good to get out in nature.
🏔 With less room your lung capacity may be affected and you might find you're short of breath with less exertion than usual. Listen to your body and pace yourself.
🏔 If activity creates pain, especially in your low back, hips and pelvis - don't hang up your boots - reach out for help!  Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe, gentle, and effective for keeping your body balanced, moving well and feeling great so you can get out there and enjoy your summer adventures!

Questions about exercise during pregnancy or how chiropractic care can help you stay active 📨 drop me a DM.

✌ See you on the trails!

* please always check with your prefered health care provider to rule out contraindications to exercise during your pregnancy before starting a new activity

05/07/2021

/// Pushing a stroller?  TRY THIS:
Rather than 2 hands on the handle, try ONE hand pushing the stroller, the other hand free to swing by your side.  Here's WHY:
When we walk we are designed to swing our arms and rotate through our spine - shoulders rotate one way while our hips rotate the opposite way.
This is a kinetic system where our tissues wind up and store energy at the peak of each step, then unwind to help propell us forward.  Think of a pendulum going back and forth.  Super smart and efficient way to move and saves energy.
When we push a stroller with two hands, we lock up the upper body. Your shoulders and upper back have a hard time doing any rotating in this position and we lose this awesome kinetic energy transfer.  Lower back and hips can step in to do some of the rotating, but this abnormal movement pattern may be aggravating, especially in postpartum when your core is re-establishing stability after baby.
This isn't just for moms pushing strollers. Dad's, grandparents, anyone pushing anything can benefit from switching it up and swinging one arm - it's a more natural way to walk (* make sure to switch sides every few mins to keep it balanced)
I get it, its not always doable depending on the terrain, and maneuverability required to keep your buggy on the path.  But when the opportunity arises, give it a try!
Please tag or share this with your friends in the stroller phase ✌  Let's MOVE well and enjoy all the spring stroller adventures! 💛

// Does your little one prefer to turn their head to ONE SIDE?
When a baby favors looking in one direction, it's a sign they have unbalanced tension in their neck.  Often it is more noticeable when they are resting - you may lay them down to sleep or position their head to look the other way but they tend to go back to looking to their prefered side.
This happens because some of the muscles or joints on one side of their body are tighter, so it is more comfortable for them to return to this rotated head position.
Correcting any imbalances is important for so many reasons:

⭐ Full and symmetrical range of motion is required to look around and helps baby explore their world.  Using all their senses, including proprioception from the body helps drive brain development.
⭐ Neck strength is built on holding their head up against gravity.  Unbalanced tension can make this harder and lead to weakness on one side of the neck.
⭐ Tummy time is easier and more enjoyable when their neck is balanced and moving well.
⭐ The curvature of their neck is developing as they learn to lift their head up.  Symmetrical tension in the neck is important.
⭐ Preference to look one direction can contribute to positional plagiocephaly or a flat spot on the head.
⭐ Tension in the neck or body can be uncomfortable and baby can be unsettled or irritable.
⭐ Neck tension can impact function of the jaw, cranial bones and structures inside the mouth which need to work together for proper latch, feeding, swallowing and  breathing.
Chiropractic for your baby is amazing for restoring balanced head and neck movement. Gentle finger tip contact adjustments, light pressure like testing the ripeness of an avocado🥑, is used to release tension in the little joints of the spine and the surrounding muscles.
I love helping babies have their best start, and it's amazing how a little correction early on can make all the difference!  If you notice your little one favoring one direction don't wait - bring them in for an assessment - usually we see big changes in the first couple of visits ⭐

/// My TOP work-from-home TIPS - - ->

A year later and home office set-ups are still a reality for many of us.  Here are my TOP work-from-home tips to keep your spine and body happy:

• Stack.  Posture matters!  Tuck your chin in and stack your head over your shoulders.  Try to keep your shoulders down and away from your ears.  "Tuck your shoulder blades in your back pockets".

• Take movement breaks. Every 20-30 minutes stand up, stretch, get a drink of water. Do 10 squats. Go up and down a flight of stairs. Do your 3 favourite yoga poses. Do 20 jumping jacks. Stretch your chest in a doorway for 30 seconds. Just move your body

• Change-up your set-up. Make your own sit-stand desk by placing your laptop on a filing box on your desk.  Switch back and forth every 30 mins.

• Change how you sit. Try sitting on an exercise ball for 20 minutes, move your hips forward/backwards, side-to-side, figure eights. Rest your feet on a stool or small box, cross your ankles, fidget and move your legs around.

• Stretch your hips. Cross one ankle over your opposite knee and lean your chest forward to feel a stretch in your glute, hold for 20-30 seconds on each side. Sttetch your hip flexor by kneeling on one knee, tilt your pelvis back (tailbone under) and press the front of your hip forward.

• Challenge yourself to mouse with your non-dominant hand.  This gives your brain a workout and your dominant arm/shoulder a break.

•   Set a schedule.  Plan breaks, time for movement, and snacks.  Stick to your plan, even when it gets busy.

•  Get outside for some fresh air - even a 10 minute walk will decrease stiffness, boost your energy and improve your focus.

If you've done all the things and your body is still complaining - Reach out and get some professional help!  There is a good chance that you have joint and muscle tension that is making it difficult to even be in a good posture, so that needs to get corrected first.

Questions? I am always here for you and happy to help you improve your work/school/home office situation to keep you and your body feeling great!

The WILD of things
That's an accurate description of most of my days with two little people ruling my world and a business to run.
And I know Im not alone, I see so many of you doing the same.  Trying to balance all the things.  Flying from one thing to the next, and just making it through to bedtime where there is a moment of quite and an insurmountable to do list.
In the chaos of this phase of my life I feel the wisdom in these quotes and thought I'd share in hopes that it resonates with you too.  A reminder to keep looking for the light in the wild of things, and allow the light to shine through. That there is always light, but sometimes we need a gentle nudge to look at it from a different view. That a shift in perspective can be everything.  ✨ And to find beauty in the chaos.  Oh, the chaos.  Its beautiful, and crazy, and overwhelming and exhausting and wonderful all at once  ✨
Thank you to my babies for bringing the wild into my life, stirring up chaos, but also being the brightest lights on my darkest days ✨

Closed Circuit /// "The brain learns to drive its body best when there is a closed loop of feedback.  Not just output, but input as well, that verifies the interaction with the world" - Livewired by David Eagleman
There is incredible communication happening every moment inside us.  A closed circuit of information traveling back and forth between brain and body.  This system is essential for our ability to interact with and experience our world.  We need both output AND input to make sense of actions/reactions, spatial awareness, and for learning!
This information super highway is your nervous system.  And it's powers are amazing!
Your bony spine protects your nervous system.  Chiropractic care addresses imbalances in your body by releasing tension in the joints and soft tissues, allowing your body and spine to move freely and your nervous system to efficiently carry messages back and forth to your brain.
Care for your body - Care for your spine - Care for the information highway that allows you to experience life and interact with the world.
