Vision Statement:
Recovery from Addictions Sunrise Healing Lodge Society has provided Aboriginal based programs in the community since 1974.

Our abstinence - based approach for adults is founded on the twelve steps and philosophy of Alcoholics Anonynmous (A.A). These principles being harmonious with Aboriginal values and teachings - are at the heart of our groups and counseling services. We welcome Aboriginal and Non - Aboriginal clients who are willing to participate in Aboriginal culture and teachings as an integral part of their road to healing and recovery from addictions.

My name is Jasmine, a mom to four beautiful children, a stepmom to two amazing boys, and a partner to a supportive man who is also in recovery. I attended Sunrise Healing Lodge from July 30th, 2024, to November 5th, 2024. Sunrise was my fourth treatment centre, which I completed back-to-back. I wanted to finish my treatment by being connected to my culture and really learning the 12 steps.

Sunrise has been nothing short of amazing. I built many meaningful friendships there with people I now consider family. The program at Sunrise helped me in so many ways - through cultural connection, family group, anger management, and, of course, the 12 steps. Sunrise is very close to Miskanawah, one of the meetings I still attend on a weekly basis. As an alumni, I get to watch clients flourish, grow, heal, and love themselves.

I’ve learned to manage my emotions, especially when days get hard. By truly embracing the 12 steps, I became part of the H&I Committee. I chair meetings at another treatment centre once a month and am currently in school to become a healthcare aide.

Recovery has been absolutely beautiful. Even when life gets challenging, every day feels like a gift, a chance to live with gratitude, hope, courage, and strength. Most importantly, recovery has allowed me to repair and rebuild my relationships with my kids and my family. Today, I get to show up for them in ways I never could before. My clean date is February 14th, 2024, and I’ll be celebrating two years sober on February 14th, 2026. We are all deserving of a beautiful life, and that’s exactly what recovery brings.

“Sunrise Healing Lodge was a foundational part of my recovery journey. Beyond sobriety, I was introduced to Indigenous teachings that emphasized balance, accountability, community, and connection to something greater than myself. The program challenged me to slow down, listen, and learn—not just about addiction, but about responsibility, respect, and how healing is deeply relational. Those teachings stayed with me long after I left Sunrise.
Today, I am seven years into my recovery journey and work in social services within an Indigenous community, supporting individuals and families navigating addiction, housing instability, and mental health challenges. The teachings I was exposed to at Sunrise continue to shape my practice—guiding how I show up, how I listen, and how I support people in a way that is strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally respectful. Sunrise helped me understand that recovery is not just about stopping something, but about learning how to live differently—and I carry that forward every day in my work.”
