Communication skills play a large role in shaping our identity and developing our confidence. We are committed to current research, theory, and practise to ensure our clients receive impactful and purposeful intervention with communication skill improvement always at the forefront of our goals. We strive for the perfect marriage of research-informed practise, experience, and student engagement so that our work is meaningful but fun! Our current staff provides support for children aged 3 – 18 and their families. We address delays or disorders in speech, language, literacy, and learning. Support is available for difficulties with saying sounds, creating and comprehending sentences (language), and written language skills - reading, writing, and spelling. We offer comprehensive services including assessment, consultation, parent training/home programming, and therapy. We strive to ensure parents understand the impact of communication delays or deficits as well as the purpose of our therapy activities. In addition to our goal of improving client communication skills, we are also mindful of empowering parents to help their children at home. All children learn differently and have individual profiles of strength and challenge. We strongly believe that interventions must be individually tailored to the client, and that one size never fits all. As such, we prefer to begin our time to together with assessment that allows the child teach us which communication skills they are good at, and which ones may require further practise. Comprehensive and accurate assessment leads to the design of effective interventions. Billing is determined through an hourly rate, but don’t forget the initial consultation is free! When that anchor isn’t clear, children (and even adults!) might:
• Mispronounce words
• Mix up sounds
• Struggle to find the right word

Ever heard someone say “I know what I want to say, but I can’t say it”? That’s often a sign of difficulty linking meaning with sound structure.

Strong reading and writing skills don’t just happen, they’re built on a solid language foundation.

To become confident readers, writers, and spellers, children need to process two key types of information:
1) Word Meaning (what words mean)
2) Word Structure (how sounds are organized)

When both systems are working together, literacy can flourish. When they’re not, learning can feel frustrating and overwhelming.

Have questions about your child’s learning?

Daylight Saving Time can be a challenge for families. When the clocks “spring forward,” many children feel the effects of losing that extra hour of sleep.
Even though the adjustment can be tiring, it can also be a great opportunity to introduce new vocabulary and conversations.

You might talk with your child about what “spring forward” means, what a clock does, and the different parts of a clock. These simple discussions can help build language while connecting to something happening in everyday life.

If everyone is feeling a little extra tired, you could also focus on words related to rest and bedtime. Talking about routines like napping, going to bed early, or waking up in the morning can also support language development.

Try playing “Morning Birds”. One person pretends to be sleeping birds in their nest. The child decides when it is morning and wakes the birds by making different bird sounds.

Small, playful moments like these can become great opportunities for conversation, imagination, and language learning.

At Speak2Read, we often use games during speech sessions. Many games can be adapted to support communication skills while children are having fun.

Building vocabulary:
Games like “Guess Who?” or “I Spy” encourage children to describe what they see and ask questions, which helps expand vocabulary and language use.

Practicing speech sounds:
Board games are a great way to repeat target sounds in a natural way. Children can practice words or phrases each time it’s their turn.

Developing social communication:
Games provide opportunities to practice turn-taking, following rules, and interacting with others.

Encouraging storytelling and creativity:
Pretend play and imaginative games can help children practice expressing ideas, building sentences, and telling stories.

Play is not just entertaining. It can also be a meaningful way to support speech and language development.
