From donating stem cells to inspiring others through art and community, Rebecca and Lee-Anna show others how they can experience what you get when you give.

Rebecca Paul is an Indigenous stem cell donor who felt transformed by the experience of donating. So much so that that she hosted a swabbing event at the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Summer Games to recruit more registrants for the stem cell registry.

Another stem cell donation advocate was motivated to show more people what you get when you give. Lee-Anna Semenyna wrote a play based on being in the hospital with her little brother as he battled cancer when they were kids. He needed a lifesaving stem cell transplant.

Lee-Anna's play made its debut at the Edmonton Fringe Festival. She partnered with Canadian Blood Services to give out swabbing kits after her show so more people can find a new, meaningful purpose when they join the stem cell registry.

Like Emmanuel, thousands of people in Canada live with sickle cell disease – in fact, it’s the most inherited condition in the country. People with sickle cell disease can’t produce enough red blood cells, which is why blood transfusions are so important.

It can affect anyone, but it’s more common in people with certain ancestral roots. And often, the best chance for a match comes from someone who shares that history.

Happy 10th anniversary to our Edmonton and Vancouver public cord blood collection sites! 🥳

Thanks to generous parents, and our partners Lois Hole Hospital for Women in Edmonton and BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, we have collected nearly 20,000 units of lifesaving cord blood from babies born at these sites over the last 10 years.

Doctors, nurses, hospital staff, Canadian Blood Services staff, elected officials, financial donors, cord blood donors and recipients gathered this week to celebrate this incredible milestone.

Cord blood is amazing! It can be used to treat up to 80 diseases and disorders, or for research to advance medical treatments.

If not collected and stored in the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank, it could otherwise be discarded as medical waste.
