CHEO’s leadership team stepped out of the halls of the children’s hospital and into the donor chair this month. Led by CHEO CEO Dr. Vera Etches, the CHEO Partners for Life contributed towards our goal of 1 million new donors! As leaders in pediatric healthcare, the CHEO team knows how important donors are to the children that they work with everyday – for some, it was their first time, for all, it was deeply rewarding. At the start of one life, you could save another! Donating cord blood is safe, simple, and doesn’t change your birth plan – including delayed cord clamping. Cord blood is collected from the placenta after birth, and if it’s not donated, it’s thrown away as medical waste.

When cord blood is collected and banked with the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank, it is available to anyone in Canada and around the world who may be looking for a lifesaving stem cell match.

When a grizzly bear attacked Colin in the remote B.C. backcountry, it wasn’t just paramedics who helped save his life.

It was you.

O-neg blood was on board of the air ambulance, and because of it, Colin made it to the hospital.

It all happened in the summertime. And with red blood cells lasting 42 days, the donor who helped Colin would’ve given in late June or sometime in July.

Stem cells from a younger donor (ages 17 to 35) typically lead to better outcomes for patients undergoing lifesaving stem cell transplants. You could be the match that gives someone a second chance at life.

Happy 10th anniversary to our Edmonton and Vancouver public cord blood collection sites! 🥳

Thanks to generous parents, and our partners Lois Hole Hospital for Women in Edmonton and BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, we have collected nearly 20,000 units of lifesaving cord blood from babies born at these sites over the last 10 years.

Doctors, nurses, hospital staff, Canadian Blood Services staff, elected officials, financial donors, cord blood donors and recipients gathered this week to celebrate this incredible milestone.

Cord blood is amazing! It can be used to treat up to 80 diseases and disorders, or for research to advance medical treatments.

If not collected and stored in the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank, it could otherwise be discarded as medical waste.
