Why do we test hormone levels in someone who has chronic pain? 🤔

Let’s talk about that ⬇️

Chronic pain affects hormones. If you’re dealing with inflammation or your body is trying to fight off an infectious disease, your hormones will actually SHIFT in order to prioritize fighting off that inflammation. Our bodies will therefore downregulate some of the “less important” systems at that time, such as:

🔹 Cognition
🔹 Recovery
🔹 Bone and muscle maintenance
🔹 Mood
🔹 Libido, and
🔹 Sexual health

The bottom line is, if you’re trying to survive, your body isn’t too concerned with reproducing.

This is why we run specialty hormone panels as part of your comprehensive intake. We want to make your treatments as precise and personalized as possible 🎯

Wondering how exercise can help with chronic pain?

Let’s talk about that 👀⬇️

Exercise is one of the MOST important tools in the toolbox against chronic pain. It directly modulates the nervous and endocrine (hormone) systems that control the perception of chronic pain. Not to mention, the importance of blood flow, increase in core body temperature, and muscle function 💪

It’s also one of the most effective treatments for chronic degenerative types of pain, including Osteoarthritis.

To put it plainly, there are few things more effective ever studied in the medical literature 💯

So, how do I prescribe exercise to my patients? 🤔

First, I go over every exercise with my patient in the office to ensure proper form and engagement of target muscle groups, as well as answer any questions they may have.

I often will provide links to Youtube video tutorials on exercises for reference in case they forget what was done in the office, as well.

The biggest variable is the patient's ability in office on the first visit…

The prescription HAS to meet the patient where they are at RIGHT NOW, and take into consideration their limitations, ability, goals, medical conditions, injuries, and timeline.

I know it can be impossible to think of exercising when you’re in constant pain, but with the necessary modifications, the vast majority of patients are able to add in SOME form of light exercise without exacerbating their chronic pain.

The key is to have the conversation ahead of time to discuss physical AND mental roadblocks prior to starting.

If you’re dealing with chronic pain, an intelligently designed exercise program might be your answer ✨

Do you have knee pain that just won’t go away? 🦵💥

Maybe you’ve had x-rays done and they even indicated you had arthritis, but nothing you do seems to help.

I know how frustrating this can be 😩

It’s important to know, however, that arthritis is not necessarily the cause of your knee pain - even if scans showed it was there.

Yes, the arthritis could be causing you pain, but very often I'm able to identify structures in and around the knee joint that are actually causing most of the pain. Common areas include:

🔸 The Patella Tendon

🔸 The Quad Tendon

🔸 Supporting Ligaments such as the MCL, ACL or PCL

🔸 Nerves that innervate and supply the knee and surrounding area

Once we’re able to identify the true CAUSE of your pain, we’ll be able to treat it appropriately so you can go on with your life 🏃

If you’re suffering from chronic pain, you should probably have gastrointestinal labs done 🧪

Why?

A LOT of our baseline inflammation actually comes from our gut. This is called “metabolic endotoxemia”, which is just a fancy way of saying “inflammation from your meals”. Because of this, the gut is commonly associated with both symptoms AND disease severity, including 👇

🔹 Pain
🔹 Sensitivity
🔹 Swelling
🔹 Stiffness in the morning

ALL of this can be related to what you’re eating and HOW your gut is metabolizing that nutrition.

Therefore, if we don’t test your gut, we end up missing a huge piece of the puzzle and completely guessing about your treatment.

Want to know FOR SURE that all your hard work is going to bring results? 🤔

PLEASE consider gastrointestinal testing.

Anyone who enjoys a certain sport or physical activity will agree: injuries suck.

Not only do they hurt, but they can leave you immobile and unable to do the things you love the most.

Most often, the recommended course of action is to rest and take time off from doing the sport or activity that caused the injury in the first place. This causes many athletes to worry that they’ll have to stop doing what they love indefinitely.

If this is you, I have promising news. As a naturopath, I will NEVER recommend that you sit around and do nothing.

Instead, I recommend “relative rest”, which involves performing certain exercises and physiotherapy movements that allow your body to heal, and ultimately, get you back to a state where you can do what you love once again 🚴‍♂️🏋️🏊🏃💪

Curious how fatigue and low mood are connected to low testosterone in men? 🤔

Testosterone has a number of different functions, from the brain all the way down through the body. For example it impacts:

🔹 Red blood cell production,
🔹 Mental health,
🔹 Exercise recovery and muscle mass
🔹 Hair loss and male pattern-baldness, and
🔹 Libido and fertility.

Testosterone quite literally affects men from head to toe, and even small fluctuations can trigger symptoms.

Are you or a loved one experiencing issues in any of these areas?

Keep watching this fascinating webinar with Dr. Erik Nelson from Neurvana Naturopathic Medicine 💙 and Leanne Aitkenhead from Community Natural Foods 🌱 as they take a deep dive into low-testosterone, what causes it, and how you can treat it.

Have you found yourself wondering: “WHY is my pain always worse in the morning?!” 😫

Let’s talk about why that might be happening and what you can do about it ⬇️

If you often feel pain and stiffness first thing in the morning, you could have an inflammatory condition that’s causing muscle and tissue damage. And because your inflammatory condition doesn’t just “turn off” at night, you just experienced eight hours of irritation WITHOUT the blood flow your body needed to clear out the metabolic waste 🦠

So, what can help this first-morning pain?

⏳ Time (sometimes it just takes a little bit of time in the morning to get things moving again).

🩸 Blood flow (increasing blood flow in the area of your pain can help clear out that inflammatory and metabolic waste).

🏃 Movement (movement = blood flow).

🔥 Heat (you’ll probably feel much better after a nice hot shower).

Are you suffering from chronic pain?

If so, you might be a good candidate for Perineural Therapy 💉

Perineural Therapy is an injection of low-dose dextrose with a little bit of Vitamin B12 that’s used to nourish and calm a nerve that’s been inflamed or injured.

It’s important to note that I am NOT injecting into a nerve (that would hurt a lot 😬).

Instead, I inject it AROUND the nerve and allow it to soak up the medicine. This way, we can use a very superficial injection that’s just below the skin. Then, the nerve endings safely track it toward deeper structures.

I love Perineural Therapy because:

1️⃣ It’s very safe.

2️⃣ It’s easy to do in an office setting.

3️⃣ Most people find that the injection is NOT painful.

4️⃣ It works extremely well.

5️⃣ The results are quick (in fact, I want you to feel the effect by the time you’re in your car).

If you’re dealing with pain caused by tight muscles, you should know about the benefits of trigger point injections 💉

Trigger point injections are a common treatment in both conventional medicine AND naturopathic medicine. They involve injecting a simple anesthetic solution into the belly of a muscle to help decrease its tension and sensitivity.

For example, tension headaches are commonly caused by tension being held by the muscles in the upper neck, which squeezes and irritates the nerves. If the tension is ignored and masked by a pill for too long, the nerves might end up needing treatment on their own.

Luckily, trigger point injections actually treat the CAUSE, which is the tight muscles themselves; and the benefits can be felt within hours after the injection 😮‍💨

Do you think trigger point injections could be a vital part of your treatment plan?

Let’s talk about psoriatic arthritis 🗣

Psoriatic arthritis is very similar to rheumatoid arthritis, however, it’s not as common for women.

The KEY difference, however, is that if you have psoriatic arthritis, you were probably already diagnosed with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that causes lesions that are usually flakey or even bleed when scratched. It will often present itself 10 or 15 years before the arthritis kicks in.

It’s important to note, however, that arthritis DOES NOT happen to everyone who has the skin condition (only about 7-15% of people).

So, how do we help people dealing with psoriatic arthritis? 🤔

The treatment plan is going to take into consideration:

🧘 Your lifestyle
🏡 Your environment
🕺 Your triggers

And then support you from the ground up to target your most problematic symptoms.

Do you ever feel like sleep makes your chronic pain WORSE? 😫

You go to bed, but somehow you’re in more pain when you wake up…

Why is this? ⬇️

There are three things we need to talk about when it comes to chronic pain and sleep:

1️⃣ The position you sleep in can matter depending on your injury. There are ways you can adjust your sleeping position that make a big difference, especially if you have shoulder or back pain. The key is to take pressure off the area to allow for proper blood flow.

2️⃣ Find the right amount of sleep that feels good for YOU. For example, if you feel refreshed and pain-free after 6.5 hrs, feel free to stick with that number.

3️⃣ Sleep is something that never should be ignored if you have chronic pain. That recovery and stress relief MATTERS.

Do you need help regaining restful and pain-free sleep? 💤

So, you’ve been diagnosed with an inflammatory arthritis and your doctor says NOT to do certain activities…

My advice? 🤔⬇️

Ask WHY.

While it’s true that exercise can be difficult for patients with inflammatory arthritis, there is A LOT of data showing that regular, aerobic types of exercises (like cycling, swimming, and even RUNNING 🤯), can be beneficial for patients that have inflammatory arthritis.

The thing to remember is…

The DOSE makes the medicine 💯

(i.e., don’t go out and run a marathon and make yourself worse)

Most importantly, pay attention to how you FEEL.
