Stop the Bleed: Essential Skills for Life-Threatening Emergencies 🛑

In a serious emergency, every second counts. First Response Training is back with the inaugural video in our series to teach you the essential skills needed to manage life-threatening external bleeding. Click on the educational video link above for a short tutorial.

Here is what you need to do:

1. Apply Direct Pressure: Use a clean dressing and apply firm, direct pressure immediately to the wound.
2. Check Circulation: Before you bandage, check circulation below the injury.
3. Bandage the Wound: While maintaining that direct pressure, apply a dressing and secure it with a bandage.
Pro-Tip: If blood soaks through, do not remove the bandage. Simply apply another one right on top!
4. Check Circulation Again: Ensure the bandage isn't too tight by checking circulation below the injury again.
5. Call EMS/9-1-1: If you haven't already, call for professional help immediately.

Training Where It Matters Most

Recently, our instructors had the opportunity to work alongside the Banff SnowSkool ski and snowboard instructors, delivering hands-on first aid training tailored to the realities of a mountain environment.

From cardiac arrest response and AED use to airway management and team-based resuscitation, these instructors train in conditions where weather, terrain, and time all matter. This course focused on practical skills, teamwork, and decision-making exactly what’s needed when help may be minutes away.

At First Response Training, we believe first aid training should reflect the environments people actually work in. Whether it’s on the slopes, in the backcountry, or in the workplace, realistic training builds confidence and saves lives.

Thank you to the Banff SnowSkool team for your engagement, professionalism, and commitment to keeping guests and teammates safe.

Here’s another First Aid Myth

MYTH: Scrapes and cuts need alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean them.

FACT: Alcohol and peroxide can damage healthy tissue and slow healing.
Instead, gently clean wounds with clean water or saline, remove debris, and cover with a clean dressing.

Simple steps done correctly make a big difference in healing and infection prevention.

At First Response Training, we focus on evidence-based first aid not outdated myths.

First Aid Myths vs Facts

There are a lot of first aid “tips” floating around that have been passed down for years but not all of them are correct, and some can actually make an injury worse.

At First Response Training, we regularly see well-intentioned people relying on outdated myths during emergencies. Knowing the right actions and what not to do can make a real difference until help arrives.

This post highlights a few common first aid myths and the facts that every responder and bystander should know. Whether it’s head injuries, sprains, nosebleeds, or other everyday emergencies, accurate knowledge matters.

Take a moment to review, save, and share because being prepared starts with knowing the facts.

Burn Awareness Week | First Aid Myths vs Facts

This week is Burn Awareness Week, and at First Response Training we’re taking the opportunity to highlight some important burn first aid myths vs facts that we still see far too often.

Burns can happen quickly — in the kitchen, at work, around campfires, or even from hot liquids at home. Knowing the right first aid steps (and what not to do) can make a significant difference in healing and preventing complications.

-Cool burns under cool running water
-Avoid home remedies like butter, oil, or toothpaste
-Never pop blisters
-Seek medical care when burns are deep, large, or involve the face, hands, or children

Burn prevention is just as important, especially when it comes to protecting kids and vulnerable adults.

As part of Burn Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to take a few minutes to review these tips, share this post, and help spread accurate first aid knowledge in our community.

Training in Action at YYC Airport

Over the past four weeks, First Response Training has had the privilege of working with 29 YYC Airport Firefighters as they completed their Canadian Red Cross certifications and renewed their Basic Life Support (BLS) and High-Performance CPR (HP CPR) skills.

These in-person training sessions followed the completion of required online pre-study, allowing us to maximize hands-on learning, realistic scenarios, and meaningful skill development during classroom time.

Training highlights included:
• Basic wound care and commercial splints used by Fire & EMS
• Choking management and advanced airway techniques
• High-performance ventilation strategies, including techniques recently brought back from Phoenix, Arizona
• Advanced bleeding control with hemostatic dressings and wound packing
• Commercial chest seals for open/sucking chest wounds
• Recognition and management of pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax
• A custom training session on the new Stryker CR2 AED, focused on supporting high-performance CPR for YYC passengers
• Current trends and best practices in first responder medical care

We’re proud to continue our strong partnership with the firefighters at YYC Airport, supporting their commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in one of Canada’s busiest transportation hubs.

Thank you to all the crews for their professionalism, engagement, and dedication to continuous improvement. The photos shared here capture just a snapshot of the work completed over the past month.

CHOKING: MYTHS vs FACTS

Choking emergencies happen fast and common myths can make things worse.

Giving water, reaching blindly into someone’s mouth, or panicking when someone is coughing are mistakes we still see far too often. Knowing when to act and how to act can save a life.

This poster breaks down common choking myths and the facts you should know so you can respond with confidence when seconds matter.

At First Response Training, we focus on practical, evidence-based skills that prepare people for real emergencies, not outdated advice.

Take a moment to review, share, and talk about this with your family, coworkers, and friends. You never know when you may be the first person on scene.

Choking is time-critical. Know what to do.
