๐Ÿ’•Fun Fact Friday!๐Ÿ’• Did you know that what we have come to know as 'yoga' when we get on our mat is actually part of a larger practice and philosophy? Bendy yoga postures and breathing are actually just two of the โœจ๏ธEight Limbs of Yogaโœจ๏ธ taken from the Yoga Sutras, an ancient text written approximately 300CE. These Eight Limbs offer a variety of practices, including ethical considerations, personal practices of self-reflection and discipline, postures and breathing practices, development of one-pointed concentration leading to meditation, and eventually experiences of pure bliss when we go beyond our ego and are able to see clearly and equally the world around and within us. Sounds pretty great to us!

The Eight Limbs effectively illustrate how yoga is a practice and philosophy based upon our own personal efforts and experiences. They are not hierarchical, so you can start anywhere in the list (most of us begin our yoga journey with postures๐Ÿคธ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ), and with some reflection you may notice how some of the other Eight Limb elements just seem to fall into place, or you can use them to guide your next step of practice. In any case, yoga incorporates much more than bendy yoga shapes, and we hope our little infographic gives you an idea of the great expanse and potential of this incredible practice!

1. Why yoga? ๐Ÿ’™ For peace and calm, to be reminded that everything is already okay and will be okay. To be reminded of our deep connection to each other and the universe. To move my body and connect with that universal Source.

2. What is your biggest challenge on the mat? ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Quieting my busy mind and figuring out the perfect balance of effort and ease.

3. If you could only bring 3 yoga postures to a desert island, what would they be? ๐Ÿ Dolphin, supported little bridge, and revolved triangle.

4. What quote/motto/philosophy do you live by? ๐Ÿ“š โ€œStay in the center of the circle and let all things take their courseโ€ annnd โ€˜Sh*t will buff outโ€™ ;)

5. Who inspires you? ๐Ÿฆ‹ The dedication and collective love and kindness of the yogadotcalm community inspires me every day. My yoga teacher inspires me with his unending energy and passion for yoga. My partner, Mike, who reminds me to laugh every day.

6. What are your other hobbies and interests? ๐ŸŽฟ Skiing, hiking, biking, climbing, gardening, and of course, cats. I also started re-learning the piano a couple of years ago, and it has been a very enjoyable journey!

7. What is your dream destination/vacation? ๐ŸฆSeeing the big cats in the wilds of Africa and Iceland.

8. What are a few small things that always make your day better? ๐ŸŽถ Cuddles with my kitties, good music, getting on my yoga mat.

9. What TV show could you binge watch forever? ๐Ÿ“บ Game of Thrones

10. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? ๐Ÿฅฆ Quinoa with roasted vegetables (specifically brussel sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower) and steamed edamame, shredded carrot and chopped fresh spinach, with a yummy cashew โ€˜cheezeโ€™ sauce and a classic chocolate cake for dessert.

๐ŸŒŸWe are back with Teacher Tuesday!๐ŸŒŸ Just for fun, we asked our teachers to answer 10 Questions so you can get to know them a bit better. Today, we are thrilled to introduce Ian!
1. Why yoga? ๐Ÿฉต It has changed me and continues to change me, making me more aware every day of how precious life and joy are, and how our ego gets in the way. I love sharing these yoga teachings with people, who are finally ready to change and wanting to learn how.

2. What is your biggest challenge on the mat? ๐Ÿง˜ Letting go of what I expect from the practice and accepting what it is, a series of "starting overs". It is getting easier to "start over" without the internal drama, and it feels great!

3. If you could only bring 3 yoga postures to a desert island, what would they be? ๐ŸThe same I take with me backpacking on long hikes and that I do before going into my tent - Raja Kapotasana (pigeon/swan and variations like gomukasana and twisted gomukasana) for my hips and hip flexors, adho mukha svanasana (downward dog) for my hamstrings, back and shoulders, and Ustrasana (camel pose) for back and spine health. Bonus - sama vritti pranayama (equal breathing).

4. What quote/motto/philosophy do you live by? ๐Ÿ“š Everything is already ok.

5. Who inspires you? ๐Ÿฆ‹ My wife, Helen. After 26 years of being married, she still amazes me with her energy, open mindedness, love of life, and deep awareness of life.

6. What are your other hobbies and interests? ๐ŸŽˆI love to backpack long and high, and to camp in the mountains. I am a balloon artist, making all sorts of creations for kids and adults alike.

7. What is your dream destination/vacation?๐Ÿ• To build a very cool van I can live in, and travel from hiking trailhead to hiking trailhead.

8. What are a few small things that always make your day better? ๐Ÿ’•A cuddle on the couch with my three favorite people, my wife Helen, and my daughters Grace (20), and Ruth (17).

9. What TV show could you binge watch forever? ๐Ÿ“บ Star Trek Next Generation or Modern Family - both amazing shows for different reasons. Star Trek is a Shakespearean space adventure, and I love all those things. Modern Family because it makes me cry and laugh - and I think I might be Phil Dumphey.

10. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? ๐ŸœSoup! A really nice veggie ramen noodle with tofu would be hard to beat or a borscht - ok now I am hungry!

Looking back on some fabulous moments of 2023. The graduation of our teacher training group, so many fabulous guest teachers and incredible workshops, family and kids yoga, philosophy nights, the commencement of our Meditation Teacher Training, volunteering at brown bagging, a night out at cirque, so many awesome twinsie ydc tank moments, and so so so many down dogs. Happy Winter Solstice yogis. โ„๏ธ Our favourite sentiment of this auspicious day:

The winter solstice marks the longest night of the year. It is a turning point, signifying the rebirth of the sun and the return of light.
It is from darkness that inspiration, strength, and life eventually emerge. It is in darkness that our inner light is lit.
Let go of what is not needed anymore. Celebrate the power of faith, that your dreams and affirmations will come into manifestation. On this day, make a conscious effort to increase the amount of light, positive thoughts and love in and around you.

1. Why yoga? ๐Ÿ’œ Yoga is a gift. It has allowed me to keep practicing throughout the years โ€“ modifying and evolving into a practice I can enjoy for the rest of my life.

2. What is your biggest challenge on the mat? ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ Once I'm down I don't want to get off the mat.

3. If you could only bring 3 yoga postures to a desert island, what would they be? ๐Ÿ Navasana (boat), Ustrastana (camel), Badda Konasana (Bound Angle)

4. What quote/motto/philosophy do you live by? ๐Ÿ“š Be positive and find joy in each day.

5. Who inspires you? ๐Ÿฆ‹ My husband John โ€“ his discipline and commitment to yoga.

6. What are your other hobbies and interests? ๐Ÿงฉ Cycling, pickleball, spinning, puzzles, going to all my grandkids activities (volleyball, hockey, etc.).

1. Why yoga? ๐Ÿ’œ I often say I came to Yoga through the back door of meditation! I love the connection between breath and movement and the very meditative aspect of the practice. I feel like there is endless potential to explore awareness in the body! Also, super fun

2. What is your biggest challenge on the mat? ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ My biggest challenge is practicing just for me instead of getting excited about how I am going to teach the sequence I am doing!

3. If you could only bring 3 yoga postures to a desert island, what would they be? ๐Ÿ Plank (I mean, we gotta stay strong ), downward dog, and reclined hamstring stretch. Runner up: Full wheel.

4. What quote/motto/philosophy do you live by? ๐Ÿ“š Maitre: loving kindness and unconditional friendliness

5. Who inspires you? ๐Ÿฆ‹ Maya Angelou and Mary Oliver! Their poems can come with me to the desert island!

6. What are your other hobbies and interests? ๐ŸŽผ I play the flute! I loooooove hiking and did a nine day solo hike in Ireland this summer! I love writing! And cats!! And cooking new recipes! I love concerts and quirky shows and would like to get out to more! And and and so many things!!! I need a Time Mastercard!

7. What is your dream destination/vacation? ๐ŸŒ„ I could go back and explore Ireland foreverโ€ฆ. But I could also be talked into an eating tour of Tuscany!

8. What are a few small things that always make your day better? โ˜•๏ธ COFFEE (all caps), cat purrs, emergency purse chocolate, car radio singalong with mostly made-up lyrics

9. What TV show could you binge watch forever? ๐Ÿ“บ I think I am the third YDC teacher to say Fleabag! I have obviously found my people!

10. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? ๐Ÿ  Brown rice topped with roasted root vegetables, ginger tempeh, sautรฉed kale, and Tahini miso gravy. Sooooooo good!
