Naturopath November part 4 - we can’t STRESS this enough 😉
Stress effects so much more than just how overwhelmed we feel!
At a hormonal level, when we talk about stress, we are talking about the hormone cortisol, and to some extent adrenaline and noradrenaline, and these hormones affect how MANY systems in the body function.
These are just a few!
⁃ Less available active thyroid hormone
⁃ Altered digestion including less stomach acid and impaired motility
⁃ Insulin resistance, meaning insulin receptors are less effective
⁃ Altered immune system chemicals including how much and what type of white
blood cells are produced and increased inflammatory chemicals
⁃ Lowered subjective and objective sleep quality
⁃ Cortisol levels are associated with increased symptoms of anxiety and
depression
⁃ Stress is a common trigger of autoimmunity in those with a genetic
susceptibility
⁃ Cortisol has a direct inhibitory effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian
axis and affects s*x hormone levels via this pathway
Stress can have a very profound impact on our health, and it’s important to recognize when it’s happening and which pathways need to be addressed!

Naturopath November part 3 - What is prolotherapy & how does it work? 💉
Sometimes a patient can do everything right (stretching, strengthening, chiro, physio, massage) and long term symptomatic benefit for their pain or injury isn’t reached.
What these therapies don’t address is connective tissue, specifically ligaments and tendons. These tissues connect muscles to bone and bone to bone, and are a huge part of structural integrity and joint function. If there is dysfunction in these tissues someone can experience pain, movement issues, and an increased likelihood of injury. Often, issues in tendons and ligaments can’t be seen on imaging like ultrasounds, so a good quality assessment is used to determine if tendon or ligament issues are contributing to someone’s pain and injury. Because these tissues don’t have their own direct blood supply, it has a hard time healing and if anything interrupts that healing process, it often doesn’t restart.
Basically prolotherapy is poking the body in a place where it forgot to keep healing, and reminding it this place needs it’s attention. It does this by causing an intentional local inflammatory response that the body responds to with fibroblasts and lays down new collagen tissue.
An example of a tendon issue that prolotherapy can be used for is tennis elbow. Tennis elbow is a repetitive strain microtrauma injury of the tendon attaching the extensor muscles on the elbow.

Naturopath November part 2! Let’s talk migraines with Dr. Shannon Ferguson ND 🧠
“There can be multiple things contributing to your migraines but we don’t necessarily have to address them all to see results! There are likely one or two big ones that if addressed would mean your migraine frequency/severity would greatly decrease. A big one I see for a lot of people is gut issues, weather, and antioxidant deficiency. We just have to find the right combination that gets you below your threshold.
Swipe left to see what I think my trigger threshold graph looks like! When I get migraines it will be out of the blue for a year with my period and sometimes ovulation. The big one taking me over the threshold is environmental toxins. When I remove the toxin in my environment (once it was heavy metals in my water supply, and the second was mold and carbon monoxide - I have bad luck with old buildings) then my migraine frequency goes down to zero, no matter what part of my cycle.
The threshold line itself might be something that is changeable, which might be why some days are weeks seem more sensitive than others. One study suggests that this is a cyclic pattern of nervous system sensitivity in people who get migraines that points to an as of yet undiscovered underlying factor. My hypothesis is neuroinflammation, but I’m excited to see what the research community discovers!”
What do you think takes you over the threshold??
