🌎 Happy World Spine Day 🌍
Today marks the 8th official ! With an estimated one billion people worldwide suffering from back pain, it affects all age groups, from children to the elderly. It is the biggest single cause of disability on the planet, with one in four adults estimated to suffer from back pain during their lives. Prevention is therefore key and this year’s World Spine Day will be encouraging people to take steps to be kind to their spines.β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
As most of you know by know, I work with a lot of spines! I truly enjoy helping patients get rid of their back pain and help prevent it as well. What is Scoliosis? πŸ”Έ

Scoliosis is a common spinal deformity in which the spine develops with one or more abnormal curves. Most cases are mild, but some cases can be severe and require surgery. Depending on how badly the spine is misaligned, symptoms of scoliosis can include uneven posture, pain, reduced flexibility, difficulty breathing, organ damage, and in severe cases, death. Anyone can get scoliosis but most generally develops in children and more often in girls than boys. πŸ”Έ

What can Chiropractors do?
Chiropractors can screen for scoliosis through a detailed history and a thorough physical exam, they can monitor the progression or regression of the curve through physical exams and imaging, and they can also treat the condition. The primary goal of scoliosis treatment is to maximize the mobility and function of the spine. When the spine has abnormal curves, it can cause pain and stress on the weight bearing joints. Treatments can include bracing, exercises, and manual spinal adjustments. πŸ”Έ

Even if it’s 9am, snowing, cold, and traffic is a nightmare, I always enter my treatment room with a smile on my face. I strongly believe that having positive energy and an optimistic outlook on life makes a huge difference when it comes tom patient care. Sometimes patients have a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year because they suffer from acute or chronic injuries. My goal is to always help them get better but also impact their lives with some positive vibes even if it is just for the duration of their treatment. Such a small gesture like a smile or a laugh can go a long way and that’s why having FUN is always a part of my treatment plan!

I truly enjoy being a Chiropractor because being able to help my patients get rid of their aches and pains is very rewarding. Seeing them return to doing what they love is the best part of being a practitioner. But, it is very special when that patient is a family member who follows treatment plans, rehab protocols, and advice. Today was a special day for me as I got to work out πŸ‹πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ with my father but was also able to show him a few techniques to loosen up his back and help him relieve some of his low back pain πŸ§˜πŸ½β€β™€οΈ. For anyone who knows my dad, also knows how stubborn he can be πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ. He usually asks for my advice and then does not follow it. I’m very proud of the fact that he is making active lifestyle changes like going to the gym, changing his diet, and taking my advice to help him feel and move better. Pops, you the real MVP πŸ†

🐜🐞 Dead Bug πŸ¦—πŸ•·
The β€œDead Bug” workout is a simple and effective exercise to help strengthen your core as well as protect your lower back from injuries. It has a very odd name but when you actually give it a shot you soon realize why it is called the β€œDead Bug.” I prescribe this exercise to all of my low back pain patients and find it has a huge impact on their spinal health. Read the steps below to learn how to do it! β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
Here are the steps to follow:
1️⃣ Lie on your back with your arms extended in front of your shoulders
2️⃣ Bend your hips and knees to a 90-degree angle
3️⃣ Tighten your core and press your lower back into the ground
4️⃣ Take a deep breath in
5️⃣ As you exhale, slowly extend your left leg toward the floor and bring your right arm overhead. Keep your abs tight and don't let your lower back arch
6️⃣ Slowly return your arm and leg to the starting position
7️⃣ Repeat with your opposite arm and leg. Continue alternating for 3 sets at 10 reps
