A recent case report in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology (Canadian Ophthalmological Society) highlights a noteworthy adverse event: bilateral, rapid-onset macular edema associated with ozanimod therapy. The condition improved upon discontinuation of the medication.

This underscores the importance of vigilant monitoring for ocular side effects in patients undergoing treatment with novel immunomodulatory agents.

A recent study in JAMA Ophthalmology caught our attention here at Calgary Eye Specialist. The study (≈50,000 infants; 2013–2023) revealed a marked decline in ROP laser photocoagulation following anti-VEGF approval in 2019.

In Canada, anti-VEGF for ROP remains off-label, with laser still the standard approach. The Japanese experience highlights how regulatory approval can influence treatment patterns on a national scale.

For Canadian ophthalmology, it raises important questions:
