Spending time in the forest, often called “forest bathing” or “shinrin-yoku,” has been shown to give your immune system a serious boost. Research suggests it can increase the activity of Natural Killer (NK) cells, which are the body’s cancer-fighting cells, by up to 80%.

The magic comes from phytoncides, which are natural antimicrobial compounds that trees and plants release to protect themselves from germs and bugs. When we breathe in phytoncides like alpha-pinene and limonene, our bodies respond by producing more NK cells. These cells are key for hunting down and destroying virus-infected cells and tumor cells.

Studies have even found that exposure to phytoncides ramps up the levels of powerful anti-cancer proteins, like perforin and granzymes, which NK cells use to kill off unhealthy cells. One experiment showed that just inhaling phytoncides vaporized into a hotel room was enough to increase NK cell activity.

Forests also reduce stress, which plays a huge role here. High cortisol levels from stress can weaken the immune system and limit NK cell function. Being in a forest helps lower cortisol, which allows the immune system to perform at its best.

The combination of reduced stress and increased NK cell activity seems to work hand in hand. Researchers believe the calming environment of forests, along with phytoncides in the air, helps regulate both the nervous and endocrine systems to cut stress and strengthen immunity.

And the benefits don’t disappear right away. Some studies found that the boost to NK cells can last over a week, and sometimes even up to a month, after a trip to the forest.
